EM Series — frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the EM400 and EM500 families?
The EM400 series are compact self-contained field sensors with the sensing element built in. The EM500 series are ruggedised units designed to take an external probe or transducer, which is what makes pressure, submersible level and soil measurement possible. Check the model datasheet for the probe type and cable length supplied.
Which sensor do I use for a bin, skip or tank?
An ultrasonic distance sensor mounted in the lid, measuring the gap to the surface below. The two numbers that decide whether it will work are the measuring range and the blind zone - the minimum distance below the sensor that it cannot measure. Read the measuring range, not the tilt or detection angle.
Can I install these outdoors or in a chamber?
Many EM series models carry an IP rating for outdoor and below-ground installation, but not all of them, and radio performance from inside a metal chamber or under a cast-iron lid is a separate question from the IP rating. Tell us the installation and we will flag it if the location is likely to attenuate the signal.
Are the batteries replaceable?
This varies by model, and where a replaceable cell is used the type is stated on the datasheet. Plan the replacement interval against your reporting interval - reporting every few minutes rather than hourly changes battery life dramatically.
Is the model I found still current?
Some early EM series models have been superseded by newer equivalents. If you are specifying for a new project rather than adding to an existing estate, ask us to confirm the current model and its successor before you order. We would rather tell you than sell you into an end-of-life line.
Which frequency variant do I need in the UK?
The EU868 variant, order code ending -868M. A -915M unit will not join a UK LoRaWAN network.
