When do I need a managed switch rather than an unmanaged one?
Choose managed when you need VLAN segregation, ring or mesh redundancy, SNMP monitoring, port security or per-port diagnostics. If the network is a handful of devices on one flat segment and nobody will ever monitor it, an unmanaged switch is the honest answer and costs less.
What actually makes a switch industrial?
Four things, and you should check all four on the datasheet: extended operating temperature range, DIN-rail or rack mounting, redundant DC power inputs, and fanless construction. Surge and EMC ratings matter in electrically noisy environments. A rebadged office switch in a metal case is none of these.
What is the difference between RSTP and HSR or PRP?
RSTP reconverges a ring after a fault in a short but non-zero time. HSR and PRP send duplicate frames over two paths so a single failure causes no lost frames at all, which is why substation specifications call for them. If your specification says zero recovery time, RSTP will not satisfy it.
Do you publish prices for these switches?
Some ranges are priced online. ATOP switches are quoted per project because configuration, port mix and optics vary - send us the model or the requirement and we will come back with a price and a lead time.
Which certification should I ask for in a substation or on rolling stock?
Substation equipment is normally specified to IEC 61850-3 and/or IEEE 1613; rail equipment to EN 50155 and the related EN 50121 EMC standards. Tell us which standard your specification calls for and we will confirm what a given model's datasheet declares. We quote from the manufacturer's declaration, never from a general claim.
What is the lead time?
Standard configurations are typically dispatched within 14 working days. Optic and port variants can differ, so we confirm the date with the quote.
