Why not just use an office switch in the panel?
Office switches assume mains AC, room temperature and airflow from a fan. Industrial unmanaged switches take a DC supply from the panel, mount on DIN rail, run fanless, and are specified over a wider temperature range. In a roadside cabinet or an unheated plant room that difference is the whole product.
Can I add VLANs to an unmanaged switch later?
No. Unmanaged switches have no configuration interface at all. If there is any prospect of needing VLANs, port mirroring or SNMP, specify a lite-managed model now - retrofitting means replacing the hardware.
Do unmanaged industrial switches support PoE?
Some models do. PoE-capable models are listed with their total power budget stated, because the budget - not the port count - is what limits how many cameras or access points you can attach.
Do they have redundant power inputs?
Many industrial unmanaged switches accept two independent DC feeds so the switch survives the loss of one supply. Check the model datasheet, as this varies within a range.
What operating temperature range should I look for?
Match it to the worst case inside the enclosure, not the ambient outside it, because panels run hot. The exact range is stated on each model's datasheet; if it is not stated, treat the product as commercial-grade.
