Gateways — frequently asked questions
Which frequency version do I need for the UK?
UK and EU LoRaWAN uses the EU868 band, so the order code you need ends in -868M. The -915M variants are built for North America and will not operate on a UK LoRaWAN network. If you are unsure which variant is on a quote, send us the full order code and we will confirm it.
Do I need a separate LoRaWAN network server?
Not necessarily. Milesight UG-series gateways include an embedded network server, so a single-site deployment can run self-contained. If you already use The Things Stack, ChirpStack or a commercial network server, the same gateway can forward to it instead. Check the model datasheet for the exact integrations supported on your firmware version.
Is a gateway the same thing as a sensor?
No. A gateway is a radio concentrator: it receives LoRaWAN packets from battery-powered sensors and forwards them over Ethernet, Wi-Fi or cellular to a network server. It measures nothing itself and it is not long-term data storage. One gateway serves many sensors, and you need at least one per site.
Indoor or outdoor gateway - how do I decide?
Use an indoor unit where the gateway sits inside a building with mains power and a network drop. Use an IP67-rated outdoor unit where the gateway is mounted externally, on a mast, pole or roof. Putting an indoor gateway inside a third-party outdoor enclosure is not equivalent, because antenna placement and thermal behaviour both change.
What if the site has no mains power or no fixed line?
A solar gateway with an integrated battery and cellular backhaul covers off-grid sites; the Milesight SG50 is the solar option in this range. For sites with power but no fixed line, several UG models offer a cellular backhaul variant - specify that at order time, because it is a different order code.
How long does delivery take?
Stocked lines are typically dispatched within 14 working days, and UK delivery is a flat £14.25 ex VAT per order. If you need a firm date for a project programme, ask us before you order and we will confirm against current supply.
