IoT Sensors — frequently asked questions
Do I need a gateway to use these sensors?
Yes. LoRaWAN sensors transmit to a LoRaWAN gateway, not to Wi-Fi and not to a phone. A minimum working system is one gateway, one or more sensors, and a network server - which on Milesight UG-series gateways can be the one built into the gateway itself.
Which frequency variant do I order for the UK?
The EU868 variant, order codes ending -868M. North American -915M units will not join a UK network.
How do I get the readings into my own software?
The network server publishes decoded readings over MQTT or HTTP. Milesight publishes payload decoders for its devices and most models are listed in The Things Network device repository, so integration usually does not require writing a decoder from scratch.
How long do the batteries last?
Battery life depends almost entirely on your reporting interval and on ambient temperature, so a single headline figure is misleading. Each model datasheet states the manufacturer's figure and the interval it assumes - tell us your reporting interval and we will point you to the right number for it.
Is this a monitoring platform with a dashboard?
No. These are sensors and gateways. They report to a network server and then to whatever platform you choose. There is no dashboard included and no monthly fee from us. If you need a platform, tell us and we will discuss options rather than assume one.
Can I mount these outdoors?
Some models are rated for outdoor and in-ground use and some are indoor-only. The IP rating and the operating temperature range are stated in each product's spec table. Do not infer an outdoor rating from the product family name.
