Rugged Serial & Modbus Gateway

Serial device servers and Modbus gateways connect legacy RS-232, RS-422 and RS-485 equipment to modern Ethernet and Modbus TCP networks, and Indiott stocks the rugged ATOP range in the UK. This archive lists one to sixteen port models with wide-temperature operation, isolation, surge protection and DIN-rail mounting for substations, plant rooms and trackside cabinets. UK engineers use them to bring meters, PLCs, RTUs and drives onto a routable network without rewiring, and to translate Modbus RTU to Modbus TCP. Choose by port count, serial standard and isolation level. These gateways sit alongside your switching layer, covered in our industrial Ethernet switches UK guide. All models ship from UK stock.

Rugged Serial & Modbus Gateway — frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a serial device server and a protocol gateway?

A serial device server tunnels raw serial data over TCP, often presenting a virtual COM port to your host software - the protocol is unchanged, it just travels over Ethernet. A protocol gateway translates between protocols, for example presenting Modbus RTU slaves as Modbus TCP registers. If your master speaks Modbus TCP you need the gateway; if an existing Windows application expects a COM port you need the device server.

Can these replace a Moxa NPort or MGate?

Functionally equivalent products exist in this range. Before swapping, confirm three things: the serial standard and wiring, the port count, and whether your host software depends on a vendor-specific virtual COM driver. That driver dependency is the usual reason a like-for-like swap fails.

How many serial ports do I need?

One per independent RS-232 or RS-422 link. RS-485 is a multidrop bus so several slaves can share one port - but total them and check the polling cycle time, because a long chain on one port slows every device on it.

Do I need isolation or surge protection?

Specify isolation where the serial run crosses between buildings, earthing systems or panels at different reference potentials, and surge protection on any run that leaves the building. The datasheet states which protection a given model includes.

Is this the same as a LoRaWAN Modbus controller?

No. These are wired devices. A LoRaWAN controller reads Modbus RTU and sends readings over radio, which is a different topology with different latency. If cabling is viable, wired is almost always the right answer.

How do I get a price?

ATOP serial gateways are quoted per project. Send us the model or the requirement with quantities and we will confirm price and lead time, typically within 14 working days.
