Smart-Grid Protocol Gateways

Smart-grid protocol gateways for substation automation and utility networks: IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 rated hardware that converts legacy serial and Modbus devices onto modern SCADA over Ethernet, with the electrical isolation and surge immunity substations demand. ATOP PG5900 and PG5901/5904/5908/5916 series, supplied in the UK by Indiott with protocol configuration support.

Smart-Grid Protocol Gateways — frequently asked questions

What does an IEC 61850 gateway do?

It maps devices that speak older protocols - Modbus, DNP3, IEC 60870-5-101 or -104 - onto an IEC 61850 substation bus, so legacy IEDs appear to the station system as IEC 61850 data. It is a translator, not a controller, and it does not replace protection relays.

Which substation hardening standard should I specify?

Equipment installed inside a substation is normally specified to IEC 61850-3 and/or IEEE 1613. Tell us which your specification calls for and we will confirm what a given model's datasheet declares. We quote against the manufacturer's declaration rather than a general category claim.

Do I need a PTP grandmaster clock as well?

You need one where the specification requires synchronised time across IEDs, typically to IEEE 1588 with the IEC 61850-9-3 power profile. A protocol gateway does not distribute time - that is a separate device.

How many ports or protocol instances do I need?

Count the distinct downstream protocol networks, not the number of devices. A single RS-485 Modbus multidrop is one instance; two separate DNP3 serial links are two. Send us the device list and we will size it with you.

Why are these products not priced on the site?

Protocol gateways are configured per project and are quoted with the configuration. That is the norm in this category - none of the manufacturers or distributors we track publish list prices for it either. Send the requirement and we will come back with a price.

What is the lead time?

Typically within 14 working days. We confirm the date with the quote, because configured items can differ.
