Description

DATASHEET

UC50x series is a multi-interface controller used for data acquisition from various sensors and
equipments. It contains different I/O interfaces such as analog input, digital input, digital output, serial
port and so on, which simplify the deployment and replacement of LoRaWAN® or cellular networks. UC50x series can be easily and quickly configured by NFC or wired USB port. For outdoor applications, it
provides flexible power like built-in solar panel or high-capacity battery and is equipped with an IP67-rated
enclosure and M12 connectors to protect itself from water and dust in harsh environments.

Specifications taken from the manufacturer datasheet.

Which version do I need?

This is a UC50x family datasheet covering UC501 and UC502. UC501 is the solar-powered, rechargeable-battery model that supports Class A and Class C and multicast, and operates from -20°C to 60°C. UC502 uses three replaceable 9000 mAh Li-SOCl2 cells, is Class A only, and operates from -30°C to 70°C. The -868M part number is the 868 MHz build; UK LoRaWAN uses EU868, so -868M is the correct UK variant.

Typical applications for the UC501

  • Outdoor environmental monitoring with SDI-12 probes
  • Smart agriculture and irrigation sensor collection
  • Remote pulse counting from field meters
  • 4-20 mA / 0-10 V industrial transmitter backhaul over LoRaWAN
  • Modbus RTU field equipment monitoring in unpowered locations

Buying guides for this product

Frequency band

Supplied on EU868, the LoRaWAN band used in the UK and across Europe. That is the default and you do not need to ask for it — the -868M in the part number is the EU868 build.

The same UC501 unit also covers IN865 and RU864. Those bands share the 863–870 MHz radio with EU868, so one device can be set to any of them in its own configuration — no different part number needed.

CN470, US915, AU915, KR920 and AS923 are a different radio and therefore a different build. Milesight makes them and we can order them: tell us where the devices are being deployed and we will confirm the part number, price and lead time.

Not sure which band applies where? The Things Network publishes the LoRaWAN frequency plan for every country.

UC501 — frequently asked questions

How is the UC501 powered outdoors?

By an embedded 6 V, 1.7 W solar panel charging two 2550 mAh ICR18650 rechargeable batteries. It can alternatively be powered by DC 5-24 V through the M12 connector.

What is the difference between the UC501 and the UC502?

The UC501 is solar-powered with rechargeable batteries, supports Class A and Class C plus multicast, and operates from -20°C to 60°C. The UC502 runs on three replaceable 9000 mAh ER26500 Li-SOCl2 batteries, is Class A only, and operates from -30°C to 70°C.

Is it waterproof enough to leave outside?

Yes. The enclosure is IP68 rated at 1 m underwater for 7 days and uses M12 connectors, with an operating range of -20°C to 60°C.

What sensors can I wire into it?

2 × GPIO (digital in, digital out or pulse counter), 2 × analogue inputs switchable between 4-20 mA and 0-10 V, one serial port switchable between RS232 and RS485 (Modbus RTU on RS485), and 1 × SDI-12 V1.4.

Can it power the connected sensors?

Yes. It provides 2 × 3.3 V outputs (continuous) and 2 × 5/9/12 V switchable outputs that can be energised for 0-10 minutes before data collection.
