Frequently asked questions

Is anonymous people counting subject to UK GDPR?

Time of flight and thermopile counters work from a depth or heat map rather than a recognisable image, and the counting runs on the sensor itself. What leaves the device is a number of entries and exits, not a picture, so there is normally no personal data to process. A conventional CCTV camera used for counting is a different matter and does need a DPIA and signage.

Which sensor suits an entrance, a corridor or a single desk?

For a main entrance use an overhead ToF counter such as the VS135 at £568.61 ex VAT or the VS133-P at £492.30. For a shop doorway or a side passage the battery VS361 storefront sensor is £40.40 and the VS350 passage counter is £74.82. For desks and meeting rooms use the VS340 at £43.39.

Do people counters need a LoRaWAN gateway?

It depends on the model. Wired ToF counters such as the VS133-P and VS135-P run over PoE Ethernet and need no gateway, only a spare switch port. Battery models such as the VS361, VS350 and VS340 report over LoRaWAN on EU868, so they need one gateway per building or site. A UG65 indoor gateway is £279.82 ex VAT.

What affects counting accuracy in practice?

Mounting height and coverage matter more than the sensor spec. Each counter has a stated height range and a field of view that sets how wide a doorway it covers, so a wide entrance may need two units or a high mount model such as the VS126. Direct sunlight on the floor, glass revolving doors and people carrying large objects are the usual sources of miscounts.
