What does a smart bin sensor do?

It measures how full a bin actually is and reports it wirelessly, so a collection round is built from the bins that need emptying rather than from a fixed rota. Indiott builds the IND-BIN with PSI Technologies, ruggedised for the bins, skips and silos a site actually runs, and quotes it per site.

Frequently asked questions

How does a bin fill-level sensor measure fullness?

It sits in the lid and measures the distance down to the surface of the waste, then reports that as a percentage. There are no moving parts and nothing for the waste to touch.

How long does the battery last?

Several years on a single battery under a normal reporting interval, because the sensor sleeps between readings and LoRaWAN uses very little power to send one.

Do I need a SIM in every bin?

No. The sensors report over LoRaWAN to one gateway that covers a wide area, so there is no per-bin data contract. That is what makes the running cost of a large fleet viable.

Can it tell the difference between full and blocked?

It reports the fill level it measures. A sudden jump to full that never falls after a scheduled collection is the pattern that flags a problem, and that is a rule you set in the dashboard rather than something the sensor decides.

Is there a monthly subscription?

No. The hardware is bought outright. No UK supplier publishes a price for this category at all, which is why ours is on the page.
