PLANT & MACHINERY / STANDBY POWER
The generator that will not start is the one you tested monthly
Standby generators exist for the worst day, and the single most common reason one fails to take the load is the starter battery. Lead-acid batteries degrade quietly: capacity falls long before terminal voltage looks obviously wrong on a spot check, and a battery that reads fine at rest can still collapse under cranking current. The regime that is supposed to catch this is a monthly off-load run, which starts the machine on a healthy day and proves very little about the battery a fortnight later. Meanwhile the charger itself can fail, and nothing tells you, because a failed charger looks exactly like a working one until the battery is flat.

The difference
Standby generators exist for the worst day, and the single most common reason one fails to take the load is the starter battery. Lead-acid batteries degrade quietly: capacity falls long before terminal voltage looks obviously wrong on a spot check, and a battery that reads fine at rest can still collapse under cranking current. The regime that is supposed to catch this is a monthly off-load run, which starts the machine on a healthy day and proves very little about the battery a fortnight later. Meanwhile the charger itself can fail, and nothing tells you, because a failed charger looks exactly like a working one until the battery is flat.
What you get
Starter battery voltage trended continuously, so degradation and a failed charger show as a downward curve rather than as a failure to start
Fuel level from the existing tank transmitter, closing the second most common reason a standby set fails to run for its rated duration
Run and fault state from the control panel, giving you an independent record of every start, test and genuine call to load
Confidence that the resilience you are paying for actually exists on the day you need it, rather than on the day you tested it

Every Indiott build runs all five layers as one accountable system. Follow a single live signal from the sensor that catches it to the report that proves it.
Turnkey LoRaWAN and industrial sensors read the physical world at the edge, on battery, without rewiring the site.
Hands a reading to CONNECT ↓
Gateways, industrial routers and serial device servers carry every reading back over LoRaWAN, 4G, 5G, Ethernet or satellite, so the far edge reports as reliably as the plant room.
Hands a signed stream to SECURE ↓
OT security by design: managed switching, VPN and firewall routers, protocol gateways and hardware data diodes keep the network segmented and the data tamper-evident to IEC 62443.
Hands a trusted stream to CONTROL ↓
When you want the system to act, remote IO, wireless valves and the bespoke Indiott Engineering line close the loop, dose, switch, isolate or interlock, with no human in the middle.
Hands an action to MANAGE ↓
The software layer turns it into decisions: live dashboards, mapping, alarming and analytics, with one-tap reports and clean feeds into your SCADA, BMS or existing platform.

How teams start
You do not boil the ocean. Nearly every rollout runs the same four moves, and you own a working, evidenced result at the end of the first one.
We walk the sites, list the assets and pin the one constraint that matters, then agree what a good result looks like before a single sensor is bought.
A focused set of sensors goes onto one site or asset group, live on our telemetry and dashboards, wired to the people who need the alert.
We tune thresholds, kill false positives, confirm the integration into your SCADA, BMS or CAFM, and write the standard design down so it repeats.
The proven design rolls out across the estate, reusing the same hardware standards and data models so every site reads the same way.

Why Indiott
We pick the best of each brand for the layer and the environment, not one vendor catalogue. Milesight, AquaIoT, Atop, Browan, SpecSens and Urban.io, chosen on merit.
Sensing, connectivity, OT security, control and the dashboard come from one accountable team, so there is no finger-pointing when something needs to talk to something else.
UK-based engineers scope the site, quote the kit and stand behind it, with compliance mapped to the regimes your auditors actually cite.
Prices are shown where we can, quoted fast where we cannot, and you get a straight answer and a bill of materials within one working day.
DEPLOYED IN THE FIELD
| Standard | What it requires |
|---|---|
| BS 7671 and BS 5266 | safety services and emergency lighting supplies depend on standby power being available when called |
| Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 | firefighting and life-safety systems reliant on standby power must be maintained in efficient working order |
| ISO 8528-12 | emergency power supply systems for safety services, covering availability and readiness of standby sets |
| Care Quality Commission and NHS Premises Assurance | continuity of power is an explicit resilience expectation on healthcare estates |
A generator with battery voltage, fuel level and run and fault state is in the low hundreds of pounds, with the gateway shared across the site. Set against a single failure to start on a genuine outage, this is one of the easier business cases on this page to make. Itemised quote within one working day.
Not on its own, and it would be wrong to claim otherwise. Resting voltage is a weak proxy for capacity, and only a load or conductance test truly proves cranking ability. What continuous voltage monitoring gives you is the trend and the charger status, which is where most failures actually originate: a battery drifting down over weeks, or a charger that stopped working in March. Combine it with the voltage dip captured during your monthly test start and you have a genuinely useful picture. It supplements load testing, it does not replace it.
Yes. The battery sensor connects across the terminals and the panel sensor reads volt-free contacts, so nothing interrupts the starting circuit. It is still work inside a generator control enclosure and should be planned with whoever maintains the set, not done casually, because this is standby equipment that has to work.
That is the strongest case for this. One dashboard covering every standby set across an estate turns a scattered set of local logbooks into a single readiness view, and it is usually the first time anyone can answer the question of how many generators are actually ready right now.
