Transmission earth leakage detection

Pay to clean the insulators that are actually leaking

Insulators on overhead transmission and distribution lines accumulate salt, industrial deposit, dust and pollution over time. That contamination creates a conductive path to earth, and the result is continuous power loss, accelerated insulator degradation, and in the worst case flashover and an outage. The standard mitigation is periodic cleaning or washing, and because there is rarely any measurement behind it, the schedule is driven by calendar and geography rather than by condition. That means money spent washing clean insulators in one section while a genuinely contaminated section, perhaps downwind of a works or nearer the coast, keeps leaking until it flashes over.

Transmission leakage detection: what changes the day it goes live

Today, without it

Insulators on overhead transmission and distribution lines accumulate salt, industrial deposit, dust and pollution over time.

With the stack live
  • Leakage current measured per circuit or section, so contamination is a number rather than an assumption about coastal proximity
  • Cleaning and washing programmes directed at the sections that are actually leaking, which is where the same budget buys far more risk reduction
  • Rising leakage trended toward the flashover risk threshold, giving warning before an outage rather than an explanation after one
  • Quantified loss, since continuous leakage is energy you generated, transmitted and then gave to earth

What you get

  • 01

Leakage current measured per circuit or section, so contamination is a number rather than an assumption about coastal proximity

  • 03

Rising leakage trended toward the flashover risk threshold, giving warning before an outage rather than an explanation after one

  • 04

Quantified loss, since continuous leakage is energy you generated, transmitted and then gave to earth

All five layers, one accountable system

Every Indiott build runs all five layers as one accountable system. Follow a single live signal from the sensor that catches it to the report that proves it.

Turnkey LoRaWAN and industrial sensors read the physical world at the edge, on battery, without rewiring the site.

Hands a reading to CONNECT

Gateways, industrial routers and serial device servers carry every reading back over LoRaWAN, 4G, 5G, Ethernet or satellite, so the far edge reports as reliably as the plant room.

Hands a signed stream to SECURE

OT security by design: managed switching, VPN and firewall routers, protocol gateways and hardware data diodes keep the network segmented and the data tamper-evident to IEC 62443.

Hands a trusted stream to CONTROL

When you want the system to act, remote IO, wireless valves and the bespoke Indiott Engineering line close the loop, dose, switch, isolate or interlock, with no human in the middle.

How teams start

From a single pilot to the whole portfolio

You do not boil the ocean. Nearly every rollout runs the same four moves, and you own a working, evidenced result at the end of the first one.

Scope & risk map

We walk the sites, list the assets and pin the one constraint that matters, then agree what a good result looks like before a single sensor is bought.

Pilot on one site

A focused set of sensors goes onto one site or asset group, live on our telemetry and dashboards, wired to the people who need the alert.

Validate & standardise

We tune thresholds, kill false positives, confirm the integration into your SCADA, BMS or CAFM, and write the standard design down so it repeats.

Scale the portfolio

The proven design rolls out across the estate, reusing the same hardware standards and data models so every site reads the same way.

Why Indiott

A specialist stack, not a box-shifter

Brand-agnostic by design

We pick the best of each brand for the layer and the environment, not one vendor catalogue. Milesight, AquaIoT, Atop, Browan, SpecSens and Urban.io, chosen on merit.

The whole stack, one supplier

Sensing, connectivity, OT security, control and the dashboard come from one accountable team, so there is no finger-pointing when something needs to talk to something else.

Specified and supported in Britain

UK-based engineers scope the site, quote the kit and stand behind it, with compliance mapped to the regimes your auditors actually cite.

Honest kit, honest pricing

Prices are shown where we can, quoted fast where we cannot, and you get a straight answer and a bill of materials within one working day.

What it costs, roughly

Instrumenting representative structures along a route is a current sensor per point plus corridor gateways. This is deliberately a sampling application rather than a per-structure one, so cost is driven by how many sections you want resolved. We scope by route and pollution zone and quote itemised within one working day.

Transmission leakage detection: asked before buying

Can this go on live transmission structures?

The sensor is a battery-powered device with a clip-on CT on an earth path, not on the live conductor. Even so, any work on a transmission or distribution structure is governed by your own safety rules, access permits and authorised-person regime, and installation must sit inside that. We supply the equipment and the specification; we do not shortcut the safety process, and any supplier who suggests otherwise should worry you.

Do we need this on every structure?

No. Leakage is a sectional and environmental phenomenon, driven by pollution source, coastal exposure and prevailing wind, so representative sampling per section usually resolves the picture. Full instrumentation would cost far more than the cleaning programme it is meant to optimise, which would rather defeat the purpose.

Will this predict a flashover?

It gives you a rising trend toward known risk conditions, which is meaningful early warning. It is not a deterministic flashover predictor, because flashover also depends on wetting events, humidity and weather that can develop in hours. Treat it as a strong input to a risk-based cleaning decision, not as a countdown timer.
