How do LoRaWAN leak and burst sensors detect a problem?

A burst shows as a sudden pressure drop or a step change in flow or reservoir level. Battery LoRaWAN sensors such as the EM500-PP pipe pressure sensor (£197.52 ex VAT) and EM500-SWL submersible level sensor (£251.38) sample on a fixed interval and raise an alarm the moment a threshold is crossed, so the control room sees the event in minutes rather than waiting for a customer report.

What is a DMA and why meter it?

A DMA, or district metered area, is a hydraulically discrete zone of the network, typically 500 to 3,000 properties, isolated by closed valves and fed through one or two metered inlets. How long do the sensor batteries last?

The Milesight EM500 series runs on replaceable lithium batteries rated for up to 10 years, depending on how often the sensor reports. Longer intervals, for example hourly rather than every few minutes, extend battery life, while frequent reporting or extreme cold shortens it. Because the cells are user-replaceable there is no need to swap the whole sensor when they run down.

Can this integrate with our existing SCADA or telemetry?

Yes. A LoRaWAN gateway such as the UG65 (£279.82 ex VAT) or outdoor UG67 (£658.39) forwards readings north over MQTT or HTTP to your platform, and Milesight UC controllers and UR routers add Modbus TCP for SCADA and RTU polling. Data lands in your existing telemetry, historian or GIS rather than a separate portal, so operators keep one pane of glass.

What accuracy can I expect from the level and pressure sensors?

It depends on the sensor and range. The EM500-SWL submersible level sensor measures hydrostatic level to roughly 0.1% of full scale, with variants from 5 m up to 100 m. The EM500-UDL ultrasonic sensor (£202.01 ex VAT) resolves distance to about a centimetre in wet wells and chambers. Where foam, debris or condensation defeat contact probes, 80 GHz radar sensors like the EM410-RDL give reliable non-contact level.

Do I need my own LoRaWAN network to run this?
