Data centre aisle temperature monitoring

Servers report their own temperature. The aisle does not.

Server hardware reports its own inlet and component temperatures perfectly well, which is exactly why the gap in most rooms goes unnoticed. What the servers cannot tell you is the air temperature in the aisle at the top of the rack, at the end of a row, or in the corner where the CRAC throw does not quite reach. Those are the places a hot spot forms, and the first evidence is usually thermal throttling on a handful of machines or a hardware failure that gets blamed on the hardware. Room-level sensing in the return path averages the problem away, and a thermal survey is a snapshot on a day with one particular load pattern.

What it costs, roughly

A hall instrumented with a few dozen aisle points and a gateway sits in the low thousands of pounds, and that is typically recovered quickly if the data supports raising supply temperature by even a degree or two. Data centre temperature monitoring: asked before buying

Our DCIM already collects temperature. Why add sensors?

If your DCIM is already fed by aisle sensors at rack height, it does not need this. Very often what it is actually fed by is server inlet telemetry and CRAC return temperatures, which are two different things and neither is the cold aisle. The quick test: can you see the temperature at the top of rack 14 right now, independent of what is installed in it? If yes, you are covered.

Is wireless acceptable in a data hall?

It is used widely, but you should apply your own change and security policy to it as you would to anything else on the floor. These devices are transmit-only telemetry on 868 MHz, not on your network and with no path into it, which is usually the reassuring part of the conversation with a security team. The gateway is the only thing that needs a network connection, and it can sit on a segregated VLAN.

Will battery sensors mean maintenance visits in a secure hall?

That is a fair concern in an access-controlled environment. Battery life is around two years on a replaceable cell, and the platform alarms in advance on low battery, so replacements batch into a planned visit rather than generating ad-hoc access requests. Nobody has to discover a dead sensor by noticing missing data.
