How much does a LoRaWAN gateway cost in the UK?
Short answer: A UK LoRaWAN gateway price runs from the indoor Milesight UG63 at the bottom to the solar SG50 at the top, a spread of close to seven times, with the semi-industrial UG65 and the outdoor UG67 in between. Live prices for all four are on the cards below. The important part is that you are not paying for capacity: all four carry 8 LoRa channels, support around 2000 Class A/B/C devices, and quote identical radio figures of -140 dBm sensitivity and 27 dBm maximum transmit power. What the money buys is the enclosure, the mounting, the processor and the way the unit gets power and backhaul.
Which LoRaWAN gateway do I actually need?
Choose the UG63 if the sensors are inside one building and there is a spare Ethernet socket and a plug near where you want to mount it. It is IP30, rated -20°C to +50°C, sits on a desk or fixes to a wall or ceiling, weighs 140 g, and takes power from USB Type-C, DC or an 802.3af PoE splitter. It is comfortably the cheapest of the four, under a third the cost of the UG65.
Choose the UG65 if the gateway lives in a plant room, a warehouse or under cover such as eaves, or if you need building-system integration. It adds an IP65 case, -40°C to +70°C operation, a quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 with 512 MB RAM and 8 GB eMMC, a gigabit WAN port, and BACnet/IP, BACnet/SC and Modbus TCP alongside MQTT and HTTP.
Choose the UG67 if the gateway itself goes outside, on a wall or a pole, with mains-fed PoE or 6-12 V DC reaching it. It is IP67, carries two external N-female antenna connectors rather than one, and adds GNSS. It costs roughly two and a third times the UG65.
Choose the SG50 if there is no power where the gateway needs to stand. Solar plus 25000 mAh of built-in batteries and 4G LTE Cat 1 backhaul let it run up to 4 days without sunlight at 100 nodes on a 10-minute reporting interval. It is the dearest of the four, but only marginally above the UG67.
Why does the price vary sevenfold when the coverage is the same?
Because the radio is the same. Every one of these four is an 8-channel SX1302-class gateway quoting -140 dBm and 27 dBm, so the specs do not distinguish them on range or on how many sensors they will hold. Three things actually separate them.
- Enclosure: IP30 on the UG63, IP65 on the UG65, IP67 on the UG67 and SG50.
- Processing and integration: the UG63 and SG50 run a dual-core 240 MHz Xtensa LX7; the UG65 and UG67 run a quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 and are the only two listing BACnet and Modbus.
- Power independence: only the SG50 works without mains.
Two negatives worth stating plainly. The SG50 is not a bigger gateway than the UG67 despite costing slightly more — it is half-duplex, has one antenna connector instead of two, and runs the lighter CPU; the premium buys freedom from mains power, not performance. And the Wi-Fi on the UG63 and SG50 is AP mode for device configuration only, not a backhaul: only the UG65 and UG67 list AP or client mode.
What else is in the bill besides the gateway?
One gateway covers a site up to around 2000 devices, so it is a one-off and the sensor count drives the total. Budget one gateway plus one sensor per measurement point, and check the network server: the UG63’s embedded server is capped at 20 devices and the SG50’s at 100, above which you run the unit as a packet forwarder into an external LNS such as The Things Stack, ChirpStack or AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN, which may carry its own subscription. Of these four, the Milesight UG63 is the cheapest by a wide margin — under a third the price of the UG65. Do I need more than one LoRaWAN gateway?
