The ATOP MW5502C is a DIN-rail Wi-Fi Modbus gateway that converts Modbus RTU/ASCII on two RS-232/422/485 ports to Modbus TCP over 2.4 GHz IEEE 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi or a 10/100BASE-T(X) RJ45 port. It takes 9-48 VDC and operates from -10°C to +60°C, suiting indoor panels and machines where two serial Modbus devices must reach a network without new cabling.

Description

MW5502C Industrial Wireless Modbus Gateway will provide you a flexible platform to convert bi-directionally Modbus RTU/ASCII/TCP trough wired and wireless Ethernet Networks. It supports IEEE802.11 b/g/n standards over 2.4GHz for Wireless connectivity, wired Ethernet through one RJ45 port and supports the four most commonly used communication standards in Serial: RS-232/485 and 422 on two DSub-9 or 5-Pin Terminal Block connectors. The ease-of-use configuration utility provided with Modbus Gateway can quickly select the hardware interface, and easily switch to the existing communication infrastructure.

Which version do I need?

ATOP documents the MW5501C and MW5502C in a single MW5501/2C row: the same 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, 1 × 10/100BASE-T(X) RJ45, 9-48 VDC input, 47 × 110 × 90 mm DIN-rail housing and -10°C to +60°C rating. The MW5502C has two RS-232/422/485 ports on DSub9 or 5-pin terminal-block connectors; the MW5501C has one on a DSub9/terminal-block combo. Neither offers serial isolation or 5 GHz. The SW5502C has the same listed interfaces but is a serial device server, not a Modbus gateway.

Typical applications for the MW5502C

  • Linking two Modbus RTU devices, such as a meter and a controller, to a Modbus TCP system over Wi-Fi
  • Machines and moving equipment where a data cable is impractical
  • Mixed RS-232 and RS-485 devices in one panel, one per port
  • Indoor plant rooms and panels within -10°C to +60°C
  • Retrofit Modbus TCP access for legacy serial equipment

MW5502C — frequently asked questions

How many serial ports does the MW5502C have?

Two RS-232/422/485 ports, each on a DSub9 or 5-pin terminal-block connector, plus one 10/100BASE-T(X) RJ45 port and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.

Which Wi-Fi bands and standards does it support?

2.4 GHz only, to IEEE 802.11 b/g/n. ATOP's dual-band 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi models are the SW5501 and SW5502 serial device servers, which are not listed as Modbus gateways.

What is the difference between the MW5502C and the MW5501C?

Only the serial port count: two ports on the MW5502C, one DSub9/terminal-block combo port on the MW5501C. Wi-Fi, Ethernet, power, housing and temperature are the same.

What is the difference between the MW5502C and the SW5502C?

The MW5502C converts Modbus TCP to Modbus RTU/ASCII. The SW5502C is a serial device server offering VirtualCOM, TCP client/server, UDP and Reverse Telnet modes, with the same listed Wi-Fi, Ethernet, power and temperature ratings.

What temperature range and power supply apply?

-10°C to +60°C operating and -40°C to +85°C storage, on a 9-48 VDC supply. Enclosures that fall below -10°C need heating or a wired rugged gateway such as the MB5904D.

Is serial isolation available?

No. ATOP lists no isolation option for the MW5501/2C; the rugged MB59xx gateways offer 2.5 kV or 3 kV optional isolation.
