Description
The PG5900A Series is a highly reliable and fault tolerant Industrial Protocol Gateway. Its powerful architecture provides seamless conversion between the different Ethernet-based protocols. The IEDs communicating on different protocols could be integrated into the system and extend its reach over the gateway’s redundant Ethernet. This device is designed to work in most demanding industries such as power substations, power generation, oil and gas, farming and manufacturing.
IEC 61850‑3 certified smart grid protocol gateway for harsh environments. Fault-tolerant architecture with secure protocol conversion between Ethernet protocols: IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-104, DNP3 over TCP/IP and Modbus TCP. It has no serial ports.

Which version do I need?
PG5900A hardware options: six Ethernet ports as 10/100 RJ45 or 100BASE-X SFP. The protocol function is a separate software licence from ATOP's table, written front-end then back-end: the front-end is the slave or server that your SCADA, RTU or PLC master talks to, and the back-end is the master or client the gateway uses to poll field devices. For example, PG5900A with 04ES-50EC presents an IEC 60870-5-104 server to the control centre and polls IEC 61850 IEDs as client; DNES-50EC does the same for a DNP3 TCP/IP master. Because the PG5900A has no serial ports, only the 12 Ethernet-to-Ethernet licences are offered: no Modbus RTU/ASCII, DNP3 serial, IEC 60870-5-101 or IEC 60870-5-103 on either side. An optional full licence runs one or more protocols concurrently on both sides instead of a single pair. If serial IEDs must be connected too, choose the PG5908A or PG5916A, which share the same Ethernet, power and IEC 61850-3 / IEEE 1613 specification.
Typical applications for the PG5900A
- Bridging an IEC 61850 station bus to an IEC 60870-5-104 control centre (04ES-50EC)
- Presenting IEC 61850 IED data to a DNP3 TCP/IP master (DNES-50EC)
- Integrating Modbus TCP devices into an IEC 61850 system (50ES-MBEC)
- Giving a Modbus TCP PLC access to IEC 61850 IED data (MBES-50EC)
- Fibre-connected protocol conversion in substations using the SFP version
- Power generation, oil and gas and manufacturing networks mixing Ethernet protocols

PG5900A — frequently asked questions
Does the PG5900A have serial ports?
No. It is an Ethernet-only platform, so ATOP offers it with the 12 Ethernet-to-Ethernet licences only. For serial IEDs choose the PG5908A (8 ports) or PG5916A (16 ports).
Which protocols can it convert?
Modbus TCP, DNP3 TCP/IP, IEC 60870-5-104 and IEC 61850, each available as a server front-end and a client back-end, for example 04ES-50EC (IEC 104 server to IEC 61850 client) or MBES-50EC (Modbus TCP server to IEC 61850 client).
What Ethernet ports does it have?
Six Fast Ethernet ports, ordered as 10/100BASE-T(X) RJ45 or 100BASE-X SFP versions, with RSTP on all six.
What power inputs does it accept?
24-48 VDC, 100-240 VAC or 100-370 VDC, with two power inputs and two relay outputs.
Which substation approvals does it carry?
ATOP's selection guide ticks IEC 61850-3 / IEEE 1613 for the PG5900A and lists EN 61010-2-201, CE (EN 61000-6-2/-6-4) and FCC Part 15 Subpart B Class A. It operates from -40°C to +85°C.
