Description
IEC 61850-3 HV & IEEE 1613 Certified NTP/PTP Grandmaster with -40 to +85 °C Operating Temperature
With an operating temperature range of -40 to +85 °C, and IEC 61850-3 HV and IEEE 1613 offering up to four times the EMC protection compared to rugged industrial-grade standards, the NTS8600 is engineered to operate reliably in environments exposed to electrical noise, temperature extremes, and radiated disturbances—ensuring uninterrupted performance and high system availability. The NTS8600 NTP Server and IEEE 1588 PTP Grandmaster is the world’s first solution fully certified to both IEC 61850-3 HV and IEEE 1613 standards, delivering exceptional resilience and precision in demanding applications such as power substations, telecommunications networks, automation systems, and enterprise infrastructure.

Which version do I need?
ATOP's 2025 brochure lists the NTS8600 and NTS8600I on a single row with identical profiles, ports and outputs; the allowed documents do not state what the I suffix changes, so confirm it before ordering if a quote shows NTS8600I. ATOP's Power brochure groups the NTS8600 with the NTS8610 as the NTS86X0 series, both certified to IEC 61850-3 HV and IEEE 1613; see the NTS8610 page for that model's detailed specification. ATOP's NTS7500 grandmaster supports only the Default, IEC 61850-9-3 and IEEE C37.238 profiles, so choose the NTS8600 when telecom (ITU-T) or IEEE 802.1AS profiles are needed.
Typical applications for the NTS8600
- Substation time synchronisation to IEC 61850-9-3 and IEEE C37.238
- Telecom network synchronisation with ITU-T G.8265.1, G.8275.1 and G.8275.2 profiles
- Active and backup grandmaster pairs on PRP LAN A/B substation networks
- PPS and IRIG-B time for legacy IEDs and merging units
- IEEE 802.1AS time for automation networks
- Enterprise NTP time service

NTS8600 — frequently asked questions
Which PTP profiles does the NTS8600 support?
Seven: the Default profile, IEC/IEEE 61850-9-3 and IEEE C37.238 for power, ITU-T G.8265.1, G.8275.1 and G.8275.2 for telecom, and IEEE 802.1AS. It also works as an NTP server.
What ports and timing outputs does it have?
Two Gigabit combo ports for PTP and NTP synchronisation, one 10/100 Mbps RJ45 management port, and up to six configurable timing outputs covering PPS, 10 MHz and IRIG-B.
Is it certified for substations?
Yes. It is certified to IEC 61850-3 HV and IEEE 1613, and ATOP describes it as the first NTP/PTP grandmaster fully certified to both. It operates from -40 to +85°C.
What is its time reference?
It takes time from GNSS and holds it with an advanced OCXO oscillator when the satellite signal is lost. Accuracy and holdover figures are not given in ATOP's 2025 brochures, so request the datasheet values for your design.
How does the NTS8600 differ from the NTS7500?
Both are ATOP grandmasters with two Gigabit combo ports and NTP. The NTS7500-PTP supports the Default, IEC 61850-9-3 and IEEE C37.238 profiles with one PPS and one 10 MHz BNC output; the NTS8600 adds ITU-T G.8265.1, G.8275.1, G.8275.2 and IEEE 802.1AS, a dedicated management port and up to six configurable outputs.
Where does it sit in an IEC 61850 substation network?
ATOP's reference topology places NTS8600 units as active and backup grandmasters at station level on PRP LAN A and B, and as process-level grandmasters, feeding RHG9X28 boundary clocks and sending PPS or IRIG-B over long distances to legacy devices.
