Description

The PG59XX Series is a highly reliable and fault tolerant Industrial Protocol Gateway. Its powerful architecture provides seamless conversion between the different protocols Ethernet or Serial based. The serial devices communicating on different protocols could be integrated into the system and extend its reach over the gateway’s redundant Ethernet. This device is designed to work in most demanding industries such as power substations, power generation, oil and gas, farming and manufacturing.

4-Port RS‑232/485/422 and 2× Fast Ethernet RJ45 or Gigabit SFP protocol gateway. Supports DNP3.0, Modbus, IEC 60870‑5‑101/103/104 and IEC 61850.

Which version do I need?

PG5904D hardware options: Ethernet as 2 × 10/100 RJ45 or 2 × 100/1000 SFP, serial connectors as TB5 terminal block or DB9, and optional 3 kV serial isolation. The protocol function is a separate software licence from ATOP's table, written front-end then back-end: the front-end is the slave or server that your SCADA, RTU or PLC master talks to, and the back-end is the master or client the gateway uses to poll field devices. For example, PG5904D with MBSS-04EC presents a Modbus RTU slave to a serial master and polls IEC 60870-5-104 IEDs as client; DNSS-01SM is a serial-to-serial licence that presents a DNP3 serial slave and polls IEC 60870-5-101 outstations on another port. All 48 licences in the table are offered on this platform. An optional full licence runs one or more protocols concurrently on both sides instead of a single pair.

Typical applications for the PG5904D

  • Bringing up to four Modbus RTU or IEC 60870-5-103 relays into an IEC 60870-5-104 SCADA (04ES-MBSM, 04ES-03SM)
  • Serial-to-serial protocol conversion between a legacy master and outstations, e.g. DNSS-01SM
  • Mapping serial DNP3 outstations into an IEC 61850 station (50ES-DNSM)
  • Fibre uplink from a remote bay or kiosk using the 100/1000 SFP version
  • DIN-rail substation cabinets needing dual power inputs and relay alarm outputs
  • Isolated RS-485 runs in electrically noisy plant using the 3 kV isolation option

PG5904D — frequently asked questions

Can the PG5904D have fibre Ethernet?

Yes. The two Ethernet ports are ordered either as 10/100BASE-T(X) RJ45 or as 100/1000BASE-X SFP slots, and both support RSTP.

What serial ports does it have?

Four full-function RS-232/422/485 ports with TB5 terminal block or DB9 connectors, and optional 3 kV isolation.

Does it support serial-to-serial protocol conversion?

Yes. All 48 licences in ATOP's table are offered on the PG5904D, including serial-to-serial pairs such as MBSS-DNSM (Modbus RTU slave to DNP3 serial master) and DNSS-01SM (DNP3 serial slave to IEC 60870-5-101 master). Single-port platforms such as the PG5901 do not offer these.

How is it powered?

Two 12-48 VDC power inputs, with optional IEEE 802.3af PoE powering, and two relay outputs for alarms.

Is the PG5904D IEC 61850-3 certified?

ATOP's selection guide does not tick IEC 61850-3 / IEEE 1613 for the PG5904D; it lists UL 61010-2-201, CE and FCC Part 15 Class A. The PG5900A, PG5908A and PG5916A are the protocol gateways ticked for IEC 61850-3 / IEEE 1613.

What is the difference between the PG5904D and the PG5908?

The PG5908 is a rack-mount unit with 8 serial ports on RJ45 connectors (optional 2.5 kV isolation), 2 × 10/100 RJ45, a single 24-48 VDC or 100-240 VAC input and a -20°C to +70°C rating. The PG5904D is DIN-rail, 4 serial ports, RJ45 or SFP Ethernet, dual 12-48 VDC inputs and -40°C to +85°C.

How many devices can it poll per protocol?

Up to 64 Modbus slaves or servers (8000 read points, 4000 write commands), up to 16 DNP3 IEDs, and up to 10 IEC 60870-5-104 IEDs; as a DNP3 or IEC 104 server it serves up to 5 clients.
