Description

The PG5916 Series is a highly reliable and fault tolerant Industrial Protocol Gateway. Its powerful architecture provides seamless conversion between the different protocols Ethernet or Serial based. The serial devices communicating on different protocols could be integrated into the system and extend its reach over the gateway’s redundant Ethernet. This device is designed to work in most demanding industries such as power substations, power generation, oil and gas, farming and manufacturing.

16-Port RS‑232/485/422 with RJ45 and 2× Fast Ethernet protocol gateway. Supports DNP3, Modbus, IEC 60870‑5‑101/103/104 and IEC 61850.

Which version do I need?

PG5916 hardware: 16 serial ports on RJ45 connectors with optional 2.5 kV isolation, and 24-48 VDC or 100-240 VAC power. The protocol function is a separate software licence from ATOP's table, written front-end then back-end: the front-end is the slave or server that your SCADA, RTU or PLC master talks to, and the back-end is the master or client the gateway uses to poll field devices. For example, PG5916 with 04ES-03SM presents an IEC 60870-5-104 server to the control centre and polls IEC 60870-5-103 protection relays on the serial ports as master; 50ES-MBSM presents an IEC 61850 server to the station bus and polls Modbus RTU devices as master. All 48 licences in the table are offered, including serial-to-serial pairs. An optional full licence runs one or more protocols concurrently on both sides instead of a single pair. If the site needs IEC 61850-3 / IEEE 1613, fibre, TB5/DB9 serial connectors or -40°C operation, choose the PG5916A instead.

Typical applications for the PG5916

  • Concentrating up to 16 serial IEDs into an IEC 61850 station bus (50ES-MBSM)
  • Collecting IEC 60870-5-103 protection relay data for an IEC 60870-5-104 SCADA (04ES-03SM)
  • Serial-to-serial conversion between a legacy master and outstations, e.g. Modbus RTU slave to DNP3 serial master (MBSS-DNSM)
  • Control-room and relay-room racks in power generation plants
  • Oil and gas and manufacturing sites with many legacy serial devices
  • Structured-cabling serial runs using RJ45 serial ports

PG5916 — frequently asked questions

What ports does the PG5916 have?

16 full-function RS-232/422/485 serial ports on RJ45 connectors, with optional 2.5 kV isolation, and 2 × 10/100BASE-T(X) RJ45 Ethernet ports that support RSTP.

What is the difference between the PG5916 and the PG5916A?

The PG5916A is ticked for IEC 61850-3 / IEEE 1613 in ATOP's guide, has 6 Fast Ethernet ports (RJ45 or SFP) instead of 2, TB5 or DB9 serial connectors with optional 3 kV isolation, two power inputs including 100-370 VDC, two relay outputs and a -40°C to +85°C rating. The PG5916 uses RJ45 serial connectors, a single 24-48 VDC or 100-240 VAC input and is rated -20°C to +70°C.

Which protocol conversions are available?

All 48 front-end/back-end licences in ATOP's table, across Modbus RTU/ASCII and TCP, DNP3 serial and TCP/IP, IEC 60870-5-101, IEC 60870-5-103 (master), IEC 60870-5-104 and IEC 61850, including serial-to-serial pairs. An optional full licence runs several protocols concurrently.

How is it powered?

From 24-48 VDC or 100-240 VAC on a single power input.

What temperature range and approvals apply?

-20°C to +70°C operation in an IP30 rack-mount housing. ATOP's guide lists CE (EN 61000-6-2/-6-4), FCC Part 15 Subpart B Class A and EN 60950-1, with industrial EMC protection.

How many devices can it poll per protocol?

Up to 64 Modbus slaves or servers (8000 read points, 4000 write commands), up to 16 DNP3 IEDs, and up to 10 IEC 60870-5-104 IEDs; as a DNP3 or IEC 104 server it serves up to 5 clients, with a 20,000-event IEC 104 buffer.
