Description

The PG5901 Series is a highly reliable and fault tolerant Industrial Protocol Gateway. Its powerful architecture provides seamless conversion between the different protocols Ethernet or Serial based. The serial devices communicating on different protocols could be integrated into the system and extend its reach over the gateway’s redundant Ethernet. This device is designed to work in most demanding industries such as power substations, power generation, oil and gas, farming and manufacturing.

1-Port RS-232/485/422 and 2× Fast Ethernet RJ45 protocol gateway. Supports DNP3.0, Modbus, IEC 60870‑5‑101/103/104 and IEC 61850 for substation/industrial smart grid integration.

Which version do I need?

PG5901 is the hardware platform: one serial port with a TB5 terminal block or DB9 connector chosen at order, and optional PoE power. The protocol function is a separate software licence from ATOP's table, written front-end then back-end: the front-end is the slave or server that your SCADA, RTU or PLC master talks to, and the back-end is the master or client the gateway uses to poll field devices. For example, PG5901 with 04ES-01SM presents an IEC 60870-5-104 server to the control centre and polls an IEC 60870-5-101 outstation on the serial port as master; MBES-50EC presents a Modbus TCP server to a PLC and polls IEC 61850 IEDs as client. 38 of the table's 48 licences are offered on this platform: with one serial port, serial-to-serial pairs such as MBSS-DNSM are not. An optional full licence runs one or more protocols concurrently on both sides instead of a single pair.

Typical applications for the PG5901

  • Moving an IEC 60870-5-101 RTU onto an IEC 60870-5-104 SCADA (04ES-01SM)
  • Presenting a single Modbus RTU device to an IEC 61850 station as a server (50ES-MBSM)
  • Exposing IEC 61850 IED data to a Modbus TCP PLC (MBES-50EC)
  • PoE-powered installation in control cabinets without a separate DC supply
  • Dual-homed Ethernet on RSTP in power substations and generation plants
  • Oil and gas, farming and manufacturing sites with one legacy serial device to integrate

PG5901 — frequently asked questions

What ports does the PG5901 have?

One RS-232/422/485 serial port, ordered with a TB5 terminal block or DB9 connector, and two 10/100BASE-T(X) RJ45 Ethernet ports that support RSTP.

Which protocols and roles does it support?

Front-end (slave/server): Modbus RTU/ASCII, Modbus TCP, DNP3 serial and TCP/IP, IEC 60870-5-101, IEC 60870-5-104 and IEC 61850. Back-end (master/client): Modbus, DNP3, IEC 60870-5-101, IEC 60870-5-103, IEC 60870-5-104 and IEC 61850. ATOP's power brochure also describes a transparent function for IEC 60870-5-101 to 104 and DNP3 serial to Ethernet that converts without point mapping.

Which conversions are not available on the PG5901?

Serial-to-serial licences, such as MBSS-DNSM or DNSS-01SM, are not offered because the platform has only one serial port. For serial-to-serial conversion choose a multi-port platform such as the PG5904D.

How is the PG5901 powered, and what temperature is it rated for?

From 9-48 VDC on a single input, or optionally through IEEE 802.3af PoE. It operates from -40°C to +85°C, mounts on DIN rail and has an IP30 housing.

What is the difference between the PG5901 and the PG5904D?

The PG5904D has 4 serial ports with optional 3 kV isolation, Ethernet as 2 × RJ45 or 2 × 100/1000 SFP, two power inputs (12-48 VDC), two relay outputs and UL 61010-2-201, and it offers all 48 licences including serial-to-serial. The PG5901 has 1 serial port, 2 × 10/100 RJ45 and a single 9-48 VDC input.

What is the difference between the PG5901 and the PG5901B?

The PG5901B adds 4G LTE Cat 4 and has one 10/100/1000 RJ45 port instead of two 10/100 ports with RSTP, with an RS-232/485 serial port and a TB14 I/O version. It is rated -40°C to +70°C against the PG5901's -40°C to +85°C.

Which IEC 61850 features are implemented?

Edition 1 and Edition 2 client and server over MMS (IEC 61850-8-1), with SCL per IEC 61850-6, 8 logical devices per port, and direct or select-before-operate control with normal or enhanced security.
