Request a price
The ATOP MW5501C is a DIN-rail Wi-Fi Modbus gateway that converts Modbus RTU/ASCII on one RS-232/422/485 port to Modbus TCP over 2.4 GHz IEEE 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi or a 10/100BASE-T(X) RJ45 port. It takes 9-48 VDC and operates from -10°C to +60°C, suiting indoor panels and machines where running Ethernet cable to a serial Modbus device is impractical.

Description
MW5501C Industrial Wireless Modbus Gateway will provide you a flexible platform to convert bi-directionally Modbus RTU/ASCII/TCP trough wired and wireless Ethernet Networks. It supports IEEE802.11 b/g/n standards over 2.4GHz for Wireless connectivity, wired Ethernet through one RJ45 port and supports the four most commonly used communication standards in Serial: RS-232/485 and 422 on one DSub-9 / 5-Pin Terminal Block Combo. The ease-of-use configuration utility provided with Modbus Gateway can quickly select the hardware interface, and easily switch to the existing communication infrastructure.

Which version do I need?
ATOP documents the MW5501C and MW5502C in a single MW5501/2C row: the same 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, 1 × 10/100BASE-T(X) RJ45, 9-48 VDC input, 47 × 110 × 90 mm DIN-rail housing and -10°C to +60°C rating. The only listed difference is serial port count: the MW5501C has one RS-232/422/485 port on a DSub9/terminal-block combo, the MW5502C has two on DSub9 or terminal-block connectors. Neither offers serial isolation or 5 GHz. The SW5501C/SW5502C have the same listed interfaces but are serial device servers (VirtualCOM, TCP/UDP), not Modbus gateways.
Typical applications for the MW5501C
- Linking a single Modbus RTU meter, drive or controller to a Modbus TCP system over Wi-Fi
- Machines and moving equipment where a data cable is impractical
- Retrofit projects adding Modbus TCP access to serial devices without new cabling
- Indoor control panels and plant rooms within -10°C to +60°C
- Temporary or relocatable monitoring installations

MW5501C — frequently asked questions
Which Wi-Fi bands and standards does the MW5501C support?
2.4 GHz only, to IEEE 802.11 b/g/n. It has no 5 GHz radio; ATOP's dual-band 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi models are the SW5501 and SW5502 serial device servers, which are not listed as Modbus gateways.
What is the difference between the MW5501C and the MW5502C?
Serial port count. The MW5501C has one RS-232/422/485 port on a DSub9/terminal-block combo; the MW5502C has two ports on DSub9 or terminal-block connectors. Wi-Fi, Ethernet, power, housing and temperature ratings are the same.
What is the difference between the MW5501C and the SW5501C?
The MW5501C is a Modbus gateway that converts Modbus TCP to Modbus RTU/ASCII. The SW5501C is a serial device server offering VirtualCOM, TCP client/server, UDP and Reverse Telnet modes. ATOP lists the same Wi-Fi band, Ethernet, power, dimensions and temperature range for both.
What temperature range is it rated for?
-10°C to +60°C operating and -40°C to +85°C storage. That is narrower than ATOP's rugged wired gateways such as the MB5904D (-40°C to +85°C), so enclosures that fall below -10°C need heating or a wired gateway.
What power supply does it need?
9-48 VDC. ATOP does not list PoE input or power redundancy for this model.
Can it act as a Modbus concentrator?
No. ATOP lists the MW5501/2C as a Modbus TCP/RTU/ASCII gateway with exception error handling; the concentrator function is on the rugged MB59xx -CT models.
