Description

The ATOP SE5201B-C1 is a low-power LTE cellular serial gateway that connects RS-232/485 field devices to central systems over the mobile network. It gives serial-only equipment such as meters, PLCs and RTUs a direct cellular path, transporting Modbus and other serial protocols to SCADA or cloud platforms without local fixed lines. A configurable power-management mechanism keeps consumption low for solar or battery installations, while high EMC protection, wide-temperature operation and a rugged metal housing suit harsh industrial and outdoor sites. Typical UK uses include remote utility outstations, environmental telemetry and unmanned plant. The SE5201B-C1 is a compact way to put legacy serial assets onto a secure cellular link. Which version do I need?

This page covers the SE5201B-C1 family. ATOP's brochure lists: SE5201B-C1-DB-EU, SE5201B-C1-DB-US, SE5201B-C1-DB-EU-GPS (a US GPS DB version is also listed), SE5201B-C1-TB-EU, SE5201B-C1-TB-US, SE5201B-C1-TB-EU-GPS and SE5201B-C1-TB-US-GPS. DB means a DB9 serial connector and TB a terminal block. EU and US are the regional LTE versions: UK networks use the European LTE bands, so order an -EU code. -GPS adds a GPS receiver for location. The SE5201B-M1 is the LTE Cat M1 / NB-IoT sibling for low-data links.

Typical applications for the SE5201B-C1

  • Remote utility outstations reporting serial meter or RTU data to SCADA
  • Environmental telemetry at sites without a fixed line
  • Solar or battery-powered installations using the configurable power management
  • Unmanned plant with serial PLCs needing a cellular path
  • Modbus RTU devices polled over cellular by a central Modbus TCP master
  • Asset location on mobile or relocatable equipment with the -GPS versions

SE5201B-C1 — frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the SE5201B-C1 and the SE5201B-M1?

The C1 uses LTE Cat 1 and comes in EU and US versions with optional GPS; the M1 uses LTE Cat M1 with NB-IoT and EGPRS support, for low-data, low-power links, and has two SIM slots for failover. Both have one RS-232/485 port, two 10/100 RJ45 ports, one DI and one DO, 9-48 VDC input and a -30°C to +75°C rating.

Which version should I order for the UK?

An -EU code, because UK networks use the European LTE bands; the -US codes are the US version. Then pick DB (DB9 serial connector) or TB (terminal block), and add -GPS if you need location data.

Does it support RS-422?

No. ATOP's selection guide lists the serial port as RS-232/RS-485 only, on a DB9 or terminal block connector.

How many SIM cards does it take?

Up to two, depending on version, according to ATOP's wireless appendix.

Is it suitable for solar or battery-powered sites?

ATOP describes the SE5201B as a super-low power consumption LTE gateway with a configurable power management mechanism, intended for power-challenged environments. It accepts 9-48 VDC.

Does it convert Modbus RTU to Modbus TCP?

Not as a listed function. It carries serial data transparently over TCP, UDP, VirtualCOM or Reverse Telnet, which suits most SCADA polling over cellular. For Modbus RTU/ASCII to Modbus TCP conversion ATOP's dedicated model is the MB5201B.

What is the operating temperature range?

-30°C to +75°C operating and -40°C to +85°C storage, in an IP30 DIN-rail housing measuring 30 × 136 × 95 mm.
