SE5908 is an 8-port rack-mount industrial serial device server. It presents eight RJ45 serial ports, software-selectable RS-232/RS-422/RS-485 at 1,200 to 921,600 bps, over two 10/100BASE-T(X) Ethernet ports in a 436 x 43.5 x 200 mm 19-inch rack chassis. Choose it over the 16-port SE5916 when eight serial devices need networking. Operating range -20°C to 70°C.

Description
The Industrial Serial Device Server SE5908 is an advance gateway for Ethernet (TCP/IP) and serial signal communications; allowing any serial device to be connected to a new or existing Ethernet network. By encapsulating serial data and transporting it over Ethernet (both copper and fiber), offers full-duplex and bi-directional data seamlessly between the four available serial ports and the Ethernet network.

Which version do I need?
Documented suffixes: -DC takes 24-48 VDC on a 3-pin lockable terminal block; -EU and -US are the mains versions (100-240 VAC) supplied with an EU or US plug — a UK buyer ordering the AC version should take SE5908-EU and use a UK mains lead. -SiS models add 2.5 kV isolated serial ports but support RS-485 and RS-422 only; RS-232 is available on non-isolated versions.
Typical applications for the SE5908
- Rack-mounted serial-to-Ethernet aggregation in a comms cabinet
- Connecting PLCs, HMIs, barcode scanners and data terminals to a TCP/IP network
- Industrial and manufacturing automation control rooms
- Secure remote access to eight serial devices over OpenVPN or IPsec
- Redundant Ethernet segments using integrated RSTP
- VirtualCOM redirection so Windows or Linux applications see local COM ports

SE5908 — frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the SE5908 and the SE5916?
Port count and weight. The SE5908 has 8 RJ45 serial ports and weighs 3,000 g; the SE5916 has 16 and weighs 3,200 g. Both share the same 436 x 43.5 x 200 mm 19-inch chassis, two 10/100 Ethernet ports and software feature set.
Do the isolated (SiS) models still support RS-232?
No. The datasheet states that RS-232/RS-485/RS-422 selection is available on non-isolated versions only; isolated versions support RS-485 and RS-422 only, with 2.5 kV isolation.
What are the power supply options?
Either a DC version taking 24-48 VDC on a 5.08mm 3-pin lockable terminal block, or an AC version taking 100-240 VAC (90-264 VAC range) on an IEC 60320-1 C14 inlet, supplied with an EU or US plug. Consumption is approximately 21 W maximum. There is no power redundancy on this model.
How is it configured?
Via ATOP Management Utility, Web UI, Telnet or serial console. The front panel also carries an LCM display with MENU and SEL buttons, plus Console, Tx, Rx, Power and Ready LEDs and a reset button.
How cold can it run?
Operating temperature is -20°C to 70°C, with storage from -40°C to 85°C and 5%-95% non-condensing humidity. If you need -40°C operation, look at the IEC 61850-3 certified SE5908A instead.
