Which version do I need?

PG5201B is the hardware platform; ATOP's brochure lists it as PG5201B-C1 (LTE Cat 1), and the serial connector is chosen as TB5 terminal block or DB9. The protocol function is a separate software licence from ATOP's table, written front-end then back-end: the front-end is the slave or server that your SCADA, RTU or PLC master talks to, and the back-end is the master or client the gateway uses to poll field devices. For example, PG5201B with 04ES-MBSM presents an IEC 60870-5-104 server to the control centre over the LTE link and polls Modbus RTU meters on the serial port as master; DNES-MBEC presents a DNP3 TCP/IP server and polls Modbus TCP devices on the LAN. Because the PG5201B has one serial port, 38 of the table's 48 licences are offered: serial-to-serial pairs such as MBSS-DNSM are not. An optional full licence runs one or more protocols concurrently on both sides instead of a single pair.

Typical applications for the PG5201B

  • Bringing Modbus RTU meters at remote distribution sites into an IEC 60870-5-104 SCADA over LTE (04ES-MBSM)
  • DNP3 telemetry from unmanned oil and gas sites with no fixed line
  • Agricultural and irrigation installations reporting over cellular
  • Presenting a single legacy serial device to an IEC 61850 system as a server (50ES-MBSM)
  • Low-power remote cabinets where one DIN-rail unit provides both the protocol conversion and the LTE uplink
  • Local switching or alarm signalling using the digital input, digital output and relay output

PG5201B — frequently asked questions

Is the PG5201B a Modbus gateway or a full protocol gateway?

It is a smart-grid protocol gateway: ATOP's software table offers 38 licences on it covering Modbus RTU/ASCII and TCP, DNP3 serial and TCP/IP, IEC 60870-5-101, IEC 60870-5-103, IEC 60870-5-104 and IEC 61850. ATOP's Modbus-only cellular unit on the same form factor is the MB5201B.

What cellular connection does the PG5201B use?

4G LTE Cat 1, with up to 2 SIM cards and VPN support. ATOP's brochure lists the orderable model as PG5201B-C1.

Which protocol conversions are not available on the PG5201B?

With a single serial port, ATOP does not offer serial-to-serial licences on it, such as MBSS-DNSM (Modbus RTU slave to DNP3 serial master) or DNSS-01SM (DNP3 serial slave to IEC 60870-5-101 master). Serial-to-Ethernet, Ethernet-to-serial and Ethernet-to-Ethernet licences are offered.

How many field devices can it poll?

ATOP's protocol gateway specification allows up to 64 Modbus slaves or servers (8000 points read, 4000 commands written), up to 16 DNP3 IEDs, and up to 10 IEDs as an IEC 60870-5-104 client. As a DNP3 or IEC 104 server it serves up to 5 clients.

What is the difference between the PG5201B and the PG5901B?

The PG5201B has 2 × 10/100 RJ45 ports, LTE Cat 1 with up to 2 SIMs, one RS-232/485 port, 1 DI, 1 DO and a relay output, rated -30°C to +75°C. The PG5901B has 1 × 10/100/1000 RJ45, LTE Cat 4 with 1 SIM and a TB14 I/O version with a second serial port and 2 DI/2 DO, rated -40°C to +70°C, and uses the higher-performance PG59XX processor where the PG5201B has a standard CPU.

What power supply and environment is it rated for?

9-48 VDC on one power input, DIN-rail mounting in an IP30 housing measuring 30 × 136 × 95 mm, and -30°C to +75°C operation. ATOP's guide lists CE (EN 61000-6-2/-6-4), RED 2014/53/EU, FCC Part 15 Subpart B Class A and EN 60950-1.
