Description

Despite Ethernet having become the new backbone standard of Industrial Automation, Serial devices still remain highly relevant today, with numerous devices installed on sites worldwide. So with ATOP’s SE5202 Series, you can transform any serial device into an Ethernet-capable one, allowing you to control and monitor your legacy serial devices via your LAN or WAN – or even over the internet.

With such connectivity, the amount of time required to configure or troubleshoot a serial device located on a factory floor or in a remote location is eliminated. And with such Ethernet-based connectivity, serial devices can be integrated into modern practices such as Industry 4.0 and IIoT, allowing you to extend their lifetime and avoid wholesale device upgrades in the near future.

Featuring 2 x software-selectable Serial Port and 1 x RJ45 Port or SFP Slot, the SE5202 Series is a simple-to-install device, with easy configurations options such as Telnet, Web browser, or other Windows utilities. And using the VirtualCOM software, Windows-based applications can access serial devices by mapping the virtual com ports to the SE5202 serial server series.

Encased in a rugged metal housing offering high EMC protection, the SE5202 Series is ideal for industrial and manufacturing automation applications, such as PLCs, HMIs, Barcode Scanners, Data Terminals, Electronic Kanbans, Shop Floor Control Systems, and Pick-to-Light Systems.

Which version do I need?

This page covers the SE5202 series. ATOP's brochure lists five codes: SE5202-DB (DB9) and SE5202-TB (terminal block) with an RJ45 port; SE5202-SiS (terminal block with serial isolation) with an RJ45 port; and SE5202-SFP-DB and SE5202-SFP-TB, which replace the RJ45 port with a 100 Mbps SFP slot for a fibre uplink. Choose SFP for long or noisy runs back to the switch, SiS where ground potential differences threaten the serial line, and DB or TB to suit your cabling.

Typical applications for the SE5202

  • Connecting two PLCs or HMIs to plant Ethernet from one unit
  • Fibre-uplinked serial access in electrically noisy areas using the SFP versions
  • Isolated RS-485 links where ground potential differences are a risk (SiS version)
  • Barcode scanners and data terminals
  • Electronic kanban and shop floor control systems
  • Pick-to-light systems

SE5202 — frequently asked questions

Can the SE5202 connect over fibre?

Yes, on the SFP versions. SE5202-SFP-DB and SE5202-SFP-TB replace the 10/100 RJ45 port with a 100 Mbps SFP slot; the other versions have the RJ45 port.

Is serial isolation available?

Yes, as an option. ATOP's selection guide lists 3 kV serial port isolation for the SE5202, ordered as the SE5202-SiS terminal block version.

What is the difference between the SE5202 and the SE5201?

The SE5202 has two serial ports instead of one, an optional SFP uplink, optional 3 kV isolation and a slightly larger 75 × 85 × 28 mm housing. Power input, EMC class and the -40°C to +70°C rating are the same.

What power supply does it need?

It accepts 5 VDC and 9-30 VDC inputs, and ATOP's selection guide ticks power redundancy for this model.

Does it convert Modbus TCP to Modbus RTU?

ATOP lists serial server modes for the SE5202 (TCP server, TCP client, UDP, VirtualCOM, Reverse Telnet) but no Modbus gateway function. ATOP's two-port Modbus gateway is the MB5202.

What is the operating temperature range?

-40°C to +70°C operating and -40°C to +85°C storage, in an IP30 metal housing.
