Which version do I need?
UK and European buyers need an -EU part number, which carries the EU band set (FDD LTE B1/B3/B5/B7/B8/B20, TDD LTE B38/B40/B41, WCDMA B1/B5/B8). The -US variants cover B2/B4/B5/B12/B13/B14/B66/B71 and are not suitable for UK networks. Suffixes then add features: -IO gives 2 digital inputs, 2 digital outputs and an extra RS-232 port on a terminal block (base models use a DB9); -GPS adds GNSS; -B- adds the embedded power bank. Example EU part numbers: MB5901B-4G-EU, MB5901B-IO-4G-EU, MB5901B-IO-4G-GPS-EU, MB5901B-4G-B-EU, MB5901B-IO-4G-B-EU, MB5901B-IO-4G-GPS-B-EU.
Typical applications for the MB5901B
- Remote Modbus sites with no fixed-line connection
- Industry 4.0 plant data collection
- Smart grid installations
- Fault relay to the host on power failure using the battery-backed -B- version
- Asset location using the GPS/GNSS variant
- Alarm and status monitoring over the 2 digital inputs and 2 digital outputs on -IO models

MB5901B — frequently asked questions
Which version do I need for a UK 4G network?
The EU version. It supports FDD LTE 2100/1800/850/2600/900/800MHz (B1/B3/B5/B7/B8/B20), TDD LTE 2600/2300/2500MHz (B38/B40/B41) and WCDMA 2100/850/900MHz (B1/B5/B8). The US version's bands (B2/B4/B5/B12/B13/B14/B66/B71) do not match UK networks.
Does it have digital I/O?
On the -IO models, yes: 2 channels of photo-coupler isolated digital input and 2 channels of digital output, normally open, rated 2A at 24 VDC. These are accessible via dedicated Modbus registers, and the IO models also add a second RS-232 serial port.
What does the -B- battery version add?
An additional embedded power bank giving 15 seconds of back-up power in the event of a power failure, so the device can relay the failure to the host before it shuts down.
Can it be managed without a data session?
Yes. Special management via SMS is supported, including polling data, issuing commands and system reboots. Web, ATOP Device Management Utility and SNMP v1/v2c/v3 are also available.
How fast is the VPN and what serial speed does it reach?
IPsec or OpenVPN tunnels reach a maximum VPN throughput of 37.9 Mbps (tested with one IPsec tunnel, peer-to-peer, over the Ethernet cable; cellular performance varies). The serial port runs at 1,200 to 921,600 bps.
