Managed vs Unmanaged Industrial Ethernet Switches: Which Does Your Site Need?

Short answer: if the network is a handful of devices in one cabinet and nobody will ever need to segment it, diagnose it remotely or keep it up when a cable fails, an unmanaged industrial switch is the right buy — it is cheaper, has nothing to configure and nothing to misconfigure. The moment the answer to any of those is “actually, yes” — multiple machine cells, CCTV plus control traffic on the same copper, a ring topology, an OT security policy — you need a managed switch. In between sits lite-managed: VLANs and basic monitoring without full-managed cost.

What “managed” actually buys you

  • VLANs — keep CCTV, control and office traffic apart on the same physical network. This is the feature most sites eventually wish they had bought.
  • Ring redundancy (ERPS/RSTP) — a cut cable heals in milliseconds instead of taking the line down.
  • Diagnostics — port statistics, SNMP alerts and mirroring, so a fault is found from a desk rather than with a ladder and a laptop.
  • Security — port locking, 802.1X and the audit surface an IEC 62443 assessment expects. An unmanaged switch cannot appear in that conversation.
  • PoE control — power-cycle a hung camera remotely instead of driving to site.

What “industrial” means (and why office switches fail here)

Industrial switches are DIN-rail or rack units rated for roughly -40 °C to +75 °C, dual DC power inputs, and surge/EMC immunity for cabinets that share space with contactors and drives. An office switch in a plant-room cabinet is the single most common cause of “random” network drops on hot days. If the cabinet is not heated and air-conditioned, buy industrial.

  1. Will traffic types ever need separating? CCTV on the same switch as PLCs means managed, now or expensively later.
  2. What does downtime cost? If a failed link stops production, ring redundancy pays for the managed premium many times over.
  3. Is there an OT security requirement? Insurers and IEC 62443 audits increasingly ask. Unmanaged switches are invisible to monitoring — that is now a finding, not a saving.

Yes, and most plants do — a managed core and ring, with small unmanaged switches inside individual machine cells hanging off it.

Do unmanaged switches support VLANs?

They pass tagged traffic but cannot create, filter or protect VLANs. Real segmentation has to happen on managed hardware.
