Which protocols does a substation protocol gateway translate?

The ATOP PG-series terminates IEC 61850 MMS and GOOSE on the station bus and presents DNP3 or IEC 60870-5-101 and 104 to the SCADA master, with the point mapping configured per site. Do I need IEC 61850-3 rated switches, or will a normal industrial switch do?

Office and light industrial switches rarely survive substation EMC. Specify switches type-tested to IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613, which covers the surge, electromagnetic interference and wide temperature range found inside a substation. The ATOP EHG7xxx managed range is built to that standard and supports redundant ring recovery, so a single fibre break does not drop the station bus.

Why fit a PTP grandmaster if the IEDs already have GPS?

Per-device GPS means many antennas, many failure points and no common reference when one is shaded or blocked. A GPS-disciplined IEEE 1588v2 grandmaster such as the ATOP NTS8600 or NTS8610 distributes one authoritative time across the whole station bus, with IRIG-B output for older relays, so sequence-of-events and protection records line up to sub-microsecond accuracy.

How do I bring legacy serial relays and meters onto the station bus?

Use a rugged serial gateway to put Modbus RTU, IEC 60870-5-101 and other RS-232, RS-422 or RS-485 devices onto Ethernet, then let the protocol gateway present them to SCADA. How does this fit the NIS Regulations and the NCSC CAF?

Both expect a defensible boundary between the station LAN and corporate IT.
