Description
EM400-TLD is a distance sensor based on ToF (time of flight), which is mainly used for detecting the fill level and position status. With an appropriate FOV with the maximum field angle of 27°, it has almost no blind spot when installed on small-sized waste bins or containers.
The embedded temperature sensor enables it to monitor whether the
containers are burning for security reasons. With IP67 waterproof rating and internal damp-proof coating, it is suitable for outdoor applications. Besides, EM400-TLD is equipped with 3-axis accelerometer to detect the status of container lid.
Milesight offers LoRaWAN® version and NB-IoT/Cat.M version to meet different communication needs. The LoRaWAN® version can be integrated with Milesight LoRaWAN® gateway and Milesight IoT Cloud solution, enabling remote and visual management of all sensor data.
The NB-IoT/Cat.M version not only supports multiple application modes to compatible with IoT platforms, but also is equipped with GNSS for tracking and security purposes.

Which version do I need?
Milesight offers this model in a LoRaWAN version and an NB-IoT/Cat.M version; only the NB-IoT/Cat.M version has GNSS and cumulative report. The datasheet lists LoRaWAN bands CN470/IN865/RU864/EU868/US915/AU915/KR920/AS923-1&2&3&4 without naming the suffixes; the -868M build is the EU868 unit used in the UK.
Typical applications for the EM400-TLD
- Waste bin and small container fill level
- Smart waste collection route planning
- Trash burning detection in bins
- Container lid open/tilt status
- Position status monitoring of the mounted device
Frequency band
Supplied on EU868, the LoRaWAN band used in the UK and across Europe. That is the default and you do not need to ask for it — the -868M in the part number is the EU868 build.
The same EM400-TLD unit also covers IN865 and RU864. Those bands share the 863–870 MHz radio with EU868, so one device can be set to any of them in its own configuration — no different part number needed.
CN470, US915, AU915, KR920 and AS923 are a different radio and therefore a different build. Milesight makes them and we can order them: tell us where the devices are being deployed and we will confirm the part number, price and lead time.
Not sure which band applies where? The Things Network publishes the LoRaWAN frequency plan for every country.

EM400-TLD — frequently asked questions
What is the maximum measuring range?
350 cm. The full detection range is 2 to 350 cm with 1 mm resolution and ±2 cm accuracy between -20°C and 70°C.
Will it detect a bin fire?
It carries an NTC temperature sensor covering -40 to 125°C at 0.1°C resolution, intended for detection and alarm of trash burning, with threshold alarms.
Does it need a gateway?
The LoRaWAN version does: it is Class A (OTAA/ABP) and works with standard LoRaWAN gateways and network servers plus Milesight IoT Cloud. Milesight also offers an NB-IoT/Cat.M version that uses a SIM instead and adds GNSS.
What batteries does it use and how long do they last?
Two replaceable 9000 mAh ER26500 Li-SOCl2 batteries. The LoRaWAN version is quoted at around 10 years in standard mode (10 min interval, 25°C) under laboratory conditions.
Is it rated for outdoor use?
Yes. IP67 enclosure with internal damp-proof coating, -30°C to 70°C operating temperature and up to 95% non-condensing humidity.
