What is a 5G CPE?

A 5G CPE is a router built to receive a 5G mobile signal and share it as a normal network: Ethernet ports, Wi-Fi or both. CPE stands for customer premises equipment. It gives a building or a site the kind of connection a fixed line would, delivered over the mobile network instead.

Most 5G CPEs sit indoors on a desk, which is where their weakness shows. Mobile signals lose strength through walls, low-emissivity glass and steel cladding, and a unit in a back office may see a fraction of the signal available on the roof. An outdoor 5G CPE solves that by putting the radio outside, then bringing the connection in on a cable.

The Milesight UF51 is an outdoor 5G CPE that supports 5G standalone and non-standalone networks with 4G LTE fallback, and delivers the connection over two Ethernet ports and optional Wi-Fi 6. It also carries the interfaces of an industrial router: RS485, an isolated digital input and output, and GNSS positioning.

The PoE input is what makes installation simple. One outdoor-rated Ethernet cable from a PoE injector or switch inside the building powers the 5G CPE on the pole and carries its traffic back, so there is no mains supply to run outside and no separate data cable.

What can 5G fixed wireless replace?

A 5G CPE such as the UF51 can replace a slow copper line, stand in while a fibre installation is months away, give a temporary site its own connection, or back up a fixed line that the business cannot afford to lose. Whether it replaces the fixed line entirely depends on the coverage and capacity at that exact spot.

Four situations suit it best:

  1. A site with no good fixed option. Rural units, farms and yards where fibre is unavailable or the installation charge is prohibitive.
  2. A site that cannot wait. New premises, pop-up sites and construction offices that need a working connection this week rather than after a line installation.
  3. Failover for a fixed line. A router with a second WAN keeps the business online when the main line fails.

Why put the antennas outside?

Put the antennas outside because coverage is measured outside. Ofcom’s Connected Nations update for spring 2026 put individual operators’ 5G coverage outside premises at between 76% and 94% in January 2026, and standalone 5G at between 49% and 85% across the three operators that had deployed it.

Those are outdoor predictions. Inside a building the signal is weaker, sometimes by a lot, so an indoor 5G CPE may fall back to 4G where an outdoor one on the same site holds 5G. The UF51’s IP67 enclosure and pole mounting exist precisely so the radio can sit where the outdoor figures apply.

Choosing the network matters as much as the hardware. The operator with the best 5G at your site may not be the one with the best national figure, so test each network’s signal at the mounting point before choosing a SIM.

What should you check before switching to 5G?

Make six checks before a 5G CPE becomes a site’s main connection. Each one has caught out a project that assumed mobile broadband behaves like a leased line.

  1. Signal at the mounting point. Measure each operator’s 5G signal where the unit will be fixed, not in the car park or on a phone indoors.
  2. The SIM and its plan. Business data plans vary widely in allowance and fair use. The UF51 takes a Micro SIM.
  3. A public IP address. Many mobile plans put devices behind shared addressing, which blocks inbound remote access. If you need to reach cameras or servers on site, ask the operator for a static public IP.
