Which version do I need?

-868M is the EU868 band, the correct LoRaWAN band for UK deployment. The datasheet lists CN470, IN865, RU864, EU868, US915, AU915, KR920 and AS923-1&2&3&4 as available frequencies.

Frequency band

Supplied on EU868, the LoRaWAN band used in the UK and across Europe. That is the default and you do not need to ask for it — the -868M in the part number is the EU868 build.

The same EM500-SMTC-868M unit also covers IN865 and RU864. Those bands share the 863–870 MHz radio with EU868, so one device can be set to any of them in its own configuration — no different part number needed.

CN470, US915, AU915, KR920 and AS923 are a different radio and therefore a different build. Milesight makes them and we can order them: tell us where the devices are being deployed and we will confirm the part number, price and lead time.

Soil moisture 0-100% to ±2% (0-50%) and ±3% (50-100%); soil temperature -40°C to 80°C to ±0.5°C; and electrical conductivity 0-20000 µs/cm to ±3% (0-10000 µs/cm) and ±5% (10000-20000 µs/cm).

How long is the probe cable and how is the probe installed?

The cable is 2 m. The soil sensor is designed for buried installation, has a 50 mm probe length and is rated IP68; the transceiver mounts separately on a pole, wall or DIN rail.

What battery does it use and how long does it last?

One 19000 mAh ER34615 Li-SOCl2 replaceable battery. The datasheet quotes up to 10 years at SF7 and SF10 on EU868, tested at a 10-minute reporting interval at 25°C.

Does it need a gateway?

It is compliant with standard LoRaWAN gateways and network servers in OTAA/ABP Class A. It also acts as a Milesight D2D controller, which allows it to trigger another Milesight device directly without a gateway.

Is it suitable for permanent outdoor installation?

Yes. The transceiver is IP67 and the buried soil sensor is IP68, with an operating temperature of -30°C to 70°C and 0-100% relative humidity, non-condensing.
