Prices are read from the shop each time this page loads and exclude VAT. Every part is also sold on its own, so you can change any quantity once the kit is in your basket.

A glasshouse can swing from cold at dawn to overheating by noon, and a single thermometer by the door misses most of it. Two EM300-TH sensors at crop height show the difference along the house, the EM500-CO2 shows whether ventilation or enrichment is doing its job, and the EM500-SMTC reports moisture, temperature and conductivity from the root zone.

Humidity and temperature together give vapour pressure deficit, the measure growers use to judge whether plants can transpire. The sensors report both values, so VPD can be calculated for every reading.

Sizing it for your site

  1. Two air sensors per house as a minimum. Long houses benefit from one every 20 to 30 m of length.
  2. One soil probe per growing medium or irrigation zone, placed in the root zone of a representative plant.
  3. One CO2 sensor per house, at crop height and away from the burner or CO2 outlet.
  4. Several houses on one site usually share a gateway. Test the signal from the furthest house.

What this kit will not do

  • The EM500-LGT measures lux, which is weighted to the human eye. Plants respond to photosynthetically active radiation, so treat lux as a comparison between days and houses, not as PAR.
  • Air sensors in direct sun read high. Shade them from direct sunlight, or they report the temperature of the sensor rather than the air.
  • The soil probe measures the 50 mm of medium around it, not the whole bed.
  • It monitors; it does not open vents, switch heaters or water the crop.

Setting it up

  1. Power the gateway. In the potting shed or on the end wall, with Ethernet, Wi-Fi or the 4G version.
  2. Join the sensors. Tap each sensor with a phone running Milesight's configuration app and name it by house and position.
  3. Hang the air sensors. At crop height, shaded from direct sun, clear of heaters and vents.
  4. Bury the soil probe. In the root zone, fully inserted, with the cable routed along the bed.
  5. Set alerts that save crops. Overheating, frost risk overnight, and moisture falling below your irrigation trigger.

Before you order

Can it calculate VPD?

The EM300-TH sensors report temperature and relative humidity, which are the two inputs to vapour pressure deficit. Your platform or spreadsheet calculates VPD from each pair of readings.

Is lux good enough for plants?

For comparing days, houses and the effect of shading, yes. For measuring the light plants use, a PAR sensor is the right instrument, and the EM500-LGT is not one.

Will the electronics survive the humidity?

The sensors are sealed: EM300-TH IP67, the EM500 transceivers IP65 to IP67, the soil probe IP68. The UG65 gateway is IP65.

What about a site with no power?

Swap the UG65 for the SG50 solar gateway, which runs from its own panel and batteries and backhauls over 4G.
