The AM103 measures CO2 with an NDIR sensor, the method used in instruments rather than the cheaper estimated readings some consumer monitors give. It is accurate to ±(30 ppm + 3% of reading) across 400 to 5,000 ppm, and it also reports temperature and humidity, which is useful when windows are opened in winter to bring CO2 down.

Each sensor shows its readings on an e-ink screen, so a teacher can see when a room needs air without logging in to anything. The gateway keeps the history for the whole school.

Sizing it for your site

  1. One sensor per teaching space, mounted at head height of a seated pupil and away from windows, doors and radiators.
  2. Up to 19 rooms fit on one UG63 with its own network server. Beyond that, use the UG56 gateway, or connect the UG63 to a platform account.
  3. A separate block across a playground usually needs its own gateway. Test the signal from the furthest room before fitting all of them.
  4. If the school IT team will not allow a device on the network, choose the 4G version of the gateway.

What this kit will not do

  • CO2 is a measure of how well a room is ventilated, not of viruses, particulates or other pollutants.
  • The AM103 is rated IP30, so it is for classrooms and halls, not kitchens or changing rooms with steam.
  • Battery life is around 4.5 years at a 10 minute interval with a good signal and around 3 years at the edge of coverage.
  • The kit does not open windows or control ventilation. It tells people when to.

Setting it up

  1. Agree where the gateway goes. Somewhere central and high, with a network port or a 4G signal. A corridor ceiling void works well.
  2. Join the sensors in the office. Tap each AM103 with a phone running Milesight's configuration app to switch it on and name it by room before you walk it round the school.
  3. Mount at seated head height. Around 1.2 m, on an internal wall, away from doors, windows and radiators.
  4. Set the alert levels. Use the levels in your school ventilation plan for the screen colour and alerts.
  5. Review after a fortnight. Look for rooms that stay high all lesson. Those are the ventilation problems worth fixing first.

Before you order

What CO2 level should trigger action in a classroom?

Follow the level in your school's ventilation plan and the Department for Education guidance it is based on. Our guide to CO2 monitors for schools summarises the guidance and where the sensor should go.

Why NDIR sensors?

NDIR measures CO2 directly by how much infrared light the gas absorbs. The AM103 is accurate to ±(30 ppm + 3% of reading) between 400 and 5,000 ppm.

Is there a version without a screen?

Yes. The AM103L is the same sensor without the e-ink display and costs a little less. Swap it in the basket if the screens are not wanted.

Do the sensors need calibrating?

The AM103 supports calibration from the configuration app. Check readings against outdoor air, around 420 ppm, once a year.
