Most server room monitors plug into the network they are meant to be watching. When a switch overheats or the router drops, the monitor goes quiet at exactly the wrong moment. This kit uses the 4G version of the UG63 gateway, so alerts travel over the mobile network regardless of what is happening on your LAN.

Two EM300-TH sensors give you the difference between the cold air going into the racks and the hot air coming out, which tells you more than a single room reading. The WS303 sits where condensate leaks start, and the WS301 explains the temperature spike that happens every time someone props the door open.

Sizing it for your site

  1. One inlet and one exhaust sensor per row of racks. A room with two rows needs four EM300-TH sensors.
  2. One leak sensor under each air conditioning unit and one at the lowest point of the floor.
  3. One door sensor per door. The UG63 handles up to 20 devices, which is more than most comms rooms will ever need.
  4. If the room is a cupboard with a single rack, one EM300-TH at the rack front is enough.

What this kit will not do

  • It measures air, not the internal temperature of servers or switches. Their own management interfaces do that.
  • The WS303 detects conductive liquid at the spot where it sits. A leak running along the far wall will not reach it, which is why the sizing adds a second one at the lowest point.
  • It does not watch the UPS or the power supply. Add a CT101 current transformer on the supply, or read the UPS through its own network card.
  • The gateway needs a SIM with a data plan, which is not included.

Setting it up

  1. Fit the SIM and power the gateway. Use the USB-C supply and place it outside the densest part of the racks so the radio is not buried in steel.
  2. Join the sensors. Tap each one with a phone running Milesight's configuration app to switch it on and join it over NFC.
  3. Mount the temperature sensors. One on the front door of the rack at mid height, one on the rear. Cable ties work on perforated doors.
  4. Place the leak sensor. Flat on the floor under the air conditioning unit, where condensate would drip first.
  5. Set alarm thresholds. Use the ranges in your equipment documentation and add a short delay so a single warm reading does not wake anyone.

What temperature should a server room be?

Follow your equipment manufacturers first. Our guide to server room temperature explains what ASHRAE actually recommends for air entering the equipment and why the room thermostat reading is not the number that matters.

Why the 4G gateway rather than the cheaper wired one?

Because the failures you most want to hear about, a switch overheating or a router dropping, can also take down the network a wired gateway would use to send the alert. The 4G version adds about £33 and removes that dependency.

Can it send text messages or emails?

Alerts come from the platform the gateway reports to. Milesight's own platform and most others can send email and app notifications; check SMS support with the platform you choose.

Will the sensors keep a record if the gateway is off?

Yes. The EM300-TH stores up to 2,800 readings and resends them when the gateway is back.
