The four things that kill comms rooms

Server room monitoring is cheap insurance against expensive failures: heat, water, power and people. Most SME comms rooms have none of it — the first sign of a failed aircon unit is the smell, and by then drives have been cooking for hours. A basic sensor kit costs less than one hour of an outage.

The good news is that server room monitoring no longer means a wired BMS point or an expensive rack appliance. Battery LoRaWAN sensors stick to the wall, a palm-sized gateway plugs into a spare switch port, and everything alerts to phones within minutes of going live. ASHRAE guidance puts recommended IT inlet temperatures at 18–27 °C — the sensors tell you when you leave that envelope.

How to spec it for your room

Size the temperature coverage to the airflow, not the floor area. A single wall sensor lies to you: it reads the mixed room average while the top of rack three runs 12 °C hotter. Put an EM300-TH at the top rear of each rack (the exhaust side) plus one AM103 at the aircon return, and you will see problems in the gradient long before a threshold trips.

Then cover the other three failure modes: a leak sensor under every condensate tray and a cable zone around the floor void; a door contact with a ‘held open’ rule; and a metering socket on the most critical single-corded kit. That combination catches the overwhelming majority of comms-room incidents — and the whole server room monitoring stack installs in an afternoon without touching the racks.

Going live without touching production

What temperature should a server room be?

ASHRAE’s recommended envelope for IT equipment inlets is 18–27 °C. Measure at the rack inlet, not the middle of the room — and remember the top of the rack can run far hotter than the bottom, which is why per-rack sensors beat a single wall unit.

Will this integrate with our existing alerting?

Yes. Beyond app push, email and SMS, the gateway and platform speak standard integrations (webhooks, MQTT, APIs), so events can land in Teams, Slack, PagerDuty or your NMS alongside everything else your team watches.

Why not just use the aircon unit's own alarm?

Because it only knows about itself. It will not see the leak from the floor above, the propped door, the failed second unit while the first masks it, or the slow ambient creep as rack load grows. Independent server room monitoring watches outcomes, not one appliance’s self-diagnosis.

Do the sensors need mains power?
