Tank Level Monitoring for Fuel, Water & Waste

Never send a van to read a level again

Tank level monitoring earns its keep in two directions: it stops run-outs (the generator that dies mid-outage, the AdBlue tank that idles a fleet) and it stops overflows (the effluent tank that breaches on a bank holiday). Either failure costs more than instrumenting every tank on the site.

Modern tank level monitoring is a battery sensor bolted to the top of the tank, reading the surface remotely and reporting over LoRaWAN or via a solar gateway from sites with no power at all. Deliveries become scheduled by data — suppliers fill when tanks need filling, not when the route plan says so. (Storing oil? Note the UK oil storage rules on bunds and overfill prevention.)

Ultrasonic, radar or submersible?

Ultrasonic is the default: non-contact, cheap, accurate to a centimetre or two, and happy with diesel, water and most chemicals. It fails where the air above the liquid is not clean — heavy vapour, condensation on the transducer, foam on the surface — and that is exactly where 60 GHz radar earns its premium, punching through what scatters sound.

Submersible hydrostatic probes measure the water column above them, so depth capacity is effectively unlimited — the choice for boreholes, reservoirs and rivers. When you spec tank level monitoring, also check the dead zone (the minimum distance each sensor needs between itself and the maximum liquid level) against your tank’s headroom; it is the spec buyers most often miss.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate are these level sensors?

Ultrasonic and radar units typically resolve to around ±1 cm, which on most storage tanks is well under 1 % of contents. For stock reconciliation that is ample; for custody transfer you would spec differently. Accuracy holds across temperature because the sensors compensate internally.

What about hazardous or ATEX-zoned tanks?

The sensors on this page are for non-classified areas. If your tank sits in an ATEX zone (petrol, solvents, grain dust), talk to us before buying — zoning changes the specification and we can advise on the right route rather than sell you the wrong box.

Can tank level monitoring trigger automatic re-ordering?

Yes — dashboards expose levels and forecast-to-empty via API and webhooks, so a low-level event can raise a purchase order or email your fuel supplier automatically. Several suppliers will work directly from a shared dashboard view.

What if the tank is miles from power and Wi-Fi?

That is the standard case, not the exception: battery sensors plus the solar SG50 gateway need nothing from the site at all. The gateway backhauls over the mobile network and one unit covers a whole compound of tanks.
