EM400-MUD is a LoRaWAN ultrasonic distance and level sensor with a 3 to 450 cm detection range, 1 mm detection resolution and a 60° beam angle, accurate to ±(1+0.3%×S) cm. Pre-set standard, bin and parking-lot modes suit medium and large waste bins and parking bays. IP67, with an NTC temperature sensor for trash-burning alarm and a 3-axis tilt sensor.

Description
EM400-MUD is a multifunctional ultrasonic distance sensor designed to detect small-range areas and small blind spots. It features switchable pre-set modes for different applications.
EM400-MUD is also equipped with a 3-axis accelerometer and temperature sensor
to detect device status. With high protection IP rating and waterproof enclosure, EM400-MUD can withstand harsh environments and operate up to 10 years using two 9000 mAh batteries. Milesight offers LoRaWAN® version and NB-IoT/Cat.M version to meet different communication needs.
The LoRaWAN® version can be integrated with Milesight LoRaWAN® gateway and Milesight IoT Cloud solution, enabling remote and visual management of all sensor data. The NB-IoT/Cat.M version not only supports multiple application modes to compatible with IoT platforms, but also is equipped with GNSS for tracking and security purposes.

Which version do I need?
The -868M suffix is the LoRaWAN EU868 version, which is what a UK buyer needs, and the LoRaWAN version is the one with three pre-set modes (standard, bin, parking lot). A separate NB-IoT/Cat.M version exists with two pre-set modes, GNSS positioning and TCP/UDP/MQTT/AWS application modes.

Frequency band
Supplied on EU868, the LoRaWAN band used in the UK and across Europe. That is the default and you do not need to ask for it — the -868M in the part number is the EU868 build.
The same EM400-MUD unit also covers IN865 and RU864. Those bands share the 863–870 MHz radio with EU868, so one device can be set to any of them in its own configuration — no different part number needed.
CN470, US915, AU915, KR920 and AS923 are a different radio and therefore a different build. Milesight makes them and we can order them: tell us where the devices are being deployed and we will confirm the part number, price and lead time.

What is the actual measuring range?
The ultrasonic detection range is 3 to 450 cm, with 1 mm detection resolution and a 60° beam angle. Accuracy is ±(1 + 0.3%×S) cm where S is the measured distance, over -15°C to 60°C.
What does the built-in accelerometer report?
It is a 3-axis accelerometer used to monitor device tilt status, reported as Normal or Tilt. It is a status flag for detecting a knocked-over or displaced sensor, not the distance measurement — distance comes from the 3-450 cm ultrasonic sensor.
How long do the batteries last?
Two 9000 mAh ER26500 Li-SOCl2 batteries give over 10 years in standard mode (10-minute interval, 25°C), over 10 years in bin mode (20-minute interval), or 5 years in parking lot mode (12 triggers per day), under laboratory conditions.
What is the temperature sensor for?
An NTC temperature sensor (-40 to 125°C, 0.1°C resolution) is fitted for the detection and alarm of trash burning inside waste bins.
Can it be installed outdoors?
Yes — IP67 waterproof enclosure with damp-proof coating inside, operating temperature -30°C to 70°C, ≤95% non-condensing humidity, screw-mounted on flat surfaces.
How is it configured?
