Description
EM400-UDL is a non-contact ultrasonic distance sensor
designed for outdoor applications such as monitoring water
level, fill level of tanks and silos, presence of objects, or snow
level. It features multiple selective probes with varying
detecting ranges to meet diverse requirements.
With high protection IP rating and waterproof enclosure, EM400-UDL can
withstand harsh environments, and it can work up to 10 years
with two 9000 mAh batteries.
Milesight offers LoRaWAN® version and NB-IoT/Cat.M version
to meet different communication needs. The LoRaWAN®
version can be integrated with Milesight LoRaWAN® gateway
and Milesight IoT Cloud solution, enabling remote and visual
management of all sensor data.
The NB-IoT/Cat.M version not only supports multiple application modes to be compatible with IoT platforms, but also is equipped with GNSS for tracking and security purposes.

Specifications taken from the manufacturer datasheet.
Which version do I need?
Four probes are documented: Standard C050 (25~500 cm) and C100 (25~1000 cm), and Pro W050 (30~500 cm) and W100 (50~1000 cm), differing in range, accuracy and operating temperature. Milesight also offers a LoRaWAN version and an NB-IoT/Cat.M version; GNSS and cumulative report are NB-IoT/Cat.M only. The datasheet lists the LoRaWAN bands but not the part-number suffix; -868M is the EU868 build used in the UK.
Typical applications for the EM400-UDL-868M
- Water level measurement in static or slow-flowing water bodies
- Water tank fill level monitoring
- Tank and container level monitoring outdoors
- Non-contact distance measurement
- Tilt/position status alarm on the mounted enclosure
Buying guides for this product
Frequency band
Supplied on EU868, the LoRaWAN band used in the UK and across Europe. That is the default and you do not need to ask for it — the -868M in the part number is the EU868 build.
The same EM400-UDL-868M unit also covers IN865 and RU864. Those bands share the 863–870 MHz radio with EU868, so one device can be set to any of them in its own configuration — no different part number needed.
CN470, US915, AU915, KR920 and AS923 are a different radio and therefore a different build. Milesight makes them and we can order them: tell us where the devices are being deployed and we will confirm the part number, price and lead time.
Not sure which band applies where? The Things Network publishes the LoRaWAN frequency plan for every country.

EM400-UDL-868M — frequently asked questions
What is the maximum measuring range?
1000 cm, on the C100 (25 ~ 1000 cm) and W100 (50 ~ 1000 cm) probes. The 500 cm probes are C050 (25 ~ 500 cm) and W050 (30 ~ 500 cm). Resolution is 1 mm on all of them, so check the probe code before ordering.
What is the difference between the C and W probes?
C050/C100 are the Standard version: accuracy ±(1+0.3%*S) cm where S is the distance, over -15°C to 60°C, and that accuracy applies to 25~800 cm. W050/W100 are the Pro version: ±1% FS over -30°C to 65°C.
Does the sensor touch the liquid?
No. It is a non-contact ultrasonic sensor, mounted above the liquid on a flat surface with screws, so it suits static or slow-flowing water and tanks.
Does it need a gateway?
The LoRaWAN version does: Class A (OTAA/ABP) with standard LoRaWAN gateways and network servers, plus Milesight IoT Cloud. The NB-IoT/Cat.M version uses a micro SIM instead and adds GNSS positioning.
What batteries does it use and how long do they last?
Two replaceable 9000 mAh ER26500 Li-SOCl2 batteries, quoted at over 10 years on the LoRaWAN version at a 10-minute interval and 25°C under laboratory conditions.
Is it rated for outdoor use?
Yes. IP67 enclosure with internal damp-proof coating, -30°C to 70°C operating temperature and up to 95% non-condensing humidity.
