In a closed poultry house, ventilation is the difference between a healthy flock and a poor one, and CO2 is the most direct record of whether it is working. Two EM500-CO2 sensors at bird height, one at each end, show whether fresh air reaches the whole house and how conditions change overnight when the house is closed up.

The UG65 gateway is sealed to IP65 and has 4G, because farm buildings rarely have a network and dust gets everywhere.

Sizing it for your site

  1. At least one CO2 sensor at each end of a house, at the height of the birds' heads, because that is where the air they breathe is.
  2. Add temperature and humidity sensors along the length. Long houses benefit from one every 20 to 30 m.
  3. One gateway usually covers several houses on the same site. Test the signal from the furthest house.
  4. Mount everything out of reach of birds and clear of the drinker and feeder lines.

What this kit will not do

  • This kit has no ammonia sensor, and ammonia is also a limit in poultry houses. Ammonia still needs checking with a suitable instrument.
  • Dust and ammonia shorten the life of any electronics. Clean the sensors between flocks and check CO2 readings against fresh outdoor air, around 420 ppm.
  • It monitors; it does not control fans, inlets or heaters, and it does not replace the house controller's own alarms.
  • The EM500-CO2 range tops out at 5,000 ppm.

Setting it up

  1. Mount the gateway. In or on the control room, with a SIM fitted and mains power.
  2. Join the sensors. Tap each sensor with a phone running Milesight's configuration app and name it by house and position.
  3. Fit at bird height. Adjustable brackets or chains let you raise the sensors as the birds grow.
  4. Set the CO2 alert. Below the limit that applies to your house, so ventilation can be adjusted before it is reached.
  5. Clean between flocks. Wipe the housings and check readings against outdoor air before the next placement.

Before you order

What CO2 level applies to a broiler house?

In England, houses stocked above 33 kg per square metre must keep carbon dioxide below 3,000 ppm and ammonia below 20 ppm, measured at the level of the chickens' heads, under the Welfare of Farmed Animals (England) Regulations 2007. Check the rules that apply to your house and stocking density.

Why two CO2 sensors?

Because ventilation is rarely even. One end of a house can be well aired while the other is stale, and a single sensor only tells you about one of them.

Can it measure ammonia?

No. None of the sensors in this kit measure ammonia, so it must be monitored separately.

Will it work through a steel shed wall?

Radio passes poorly through steel. Mount the gateway on the outside wall or in the control room doorway and test the signal from inside the house.
