Frequently asked questions

Radar or ultrasonic: which level sensor should I use?

For open channels and clean conditions the EM500-UDL ultrasonic sensor (£202.01 ex VAT) or compact EM400-MUD (£86.79) resolve level to about a centimetre. Where foam, spray, debris or heavy rain defeat ultrasonic, the EM410-RDL 80 GHz radar sensor (£224.45) measures non-contact through weather. Both mount above the water so nothing sits in the flow.

How is a flood alert actually triggered?

Each sensor samples on a fixed interval and carries configurable thresholds. When level rises past a warning or action stage the sensor flags the reading and the platform raises an alert by email, SMS or webhook. Because reporting is minutes rather than a manual gauge board read on a site visit, the control room sees a rising trend early enough to act.

Do the sensors work off-grid on a remote watercourse?

Yes. The level sensors are battery powered for up to several years, and for the gateway a solar option removes the need for mains. The SG50 ultra low power solar LoRaWAN gateway is £683.83 ex VAT, and the IP67 outdoor UG67 gateway is £658.39 where power exists. One gateway covers several kilometres of open catchment.

Can I monitor a piped or pressurised system too?

Yes. For pipe and chamber pressure the EM500-PP pipe pressure sensor (£197.52 ex VAT) reports pressure and derived head, useful on rising mains and surcharge points. Combined with level sensors on gullies and attenuation tanks, you see both open-channel level and pressurised behaviour across a drainage or SuDS network.

What accuracy and range can I expect?

The ultrasonic sensors resolve distance to roughly a centimetre within their measuring range, and the 80 GHz radar sensor gives reliable non-contact level to several metres regardless of weather. Site the sensor with a clear cone to the water surface and away from ladders or pipework, and readings stay stable across the range.

Does it integrate with our telemetry or GIS?

Yes. The gateway forwards readings north over MQTT or HTTP into your telemetry, historian or GIS, so flood data sits alongside existing SCADA rather than in a separate portal. Thresholds and trends are available to the same operators who run the wider water or highways network.
