A standby generator is only tested when someone runs it. Between tests, a flat starter battery, a low fuel level or a controller alarm can sit unnoticed until the mains fails. Most modern generator controllers already publish that information over RS485 Modbus. The UC300 reads it and sends it over LoRaWAN, with four digital inputs for panels that only offer volt-free contacts.

An EM300-TH in the enclosure and an EM300-MCS on its door add the conditions around the set: a cold, damp enclosure makes starting harder and corrodes terminals.

Sizing it for your site

  1. One UC300 per generator controller. It reads up to 32 Modbus registers from up to 32 devices on one RS485 bus.
  2. Pick the registers you need from the controller maker's Modbus documentation: engine running, common alarm, battery voltage, fuel level and run hours cover most sites.
  3. One gateway covers several generators in the same compound.
  4. Where the controller has no Modbus port, wire its volt-free run and fault outputs to the UC300 digital inputs instead.

What this kit will not do

  • The UC300 needs a 5 to 24 V DC supply. A 24 V starter battery on charge sits above 24 V, so use a DC to DC converter or a separate supply rather than connecting it straight to the battery.
  • Modbus must be enabled on the controller, and some controllers need a communications module or a setting changed first.
  • It monitors; it does not start or test the generator. Routine running and load testing still apply.
  • The UC300 is IP30 in a metal case, so it must be installed inside the control panel or another enclosure.

Setting it up

  1. Read the controller manual. Find the RS485 terminals, the Modbus address and baud rate, and the register numbers for the values you want.
  2. Plan the power. Provide a 5 to 24 V DC supply for the UC300 from a converter inside the panel.
  3. Configure the UC300. Enter the Modbus registers and the digital input functions with Milesight's configuration tools, then join it to the gateway.
  4. Install inside the panel. A competent engineer mounts the UC300 on DIN rail and wires RS485 and power with the set isolated.
  5. Test with a planned run. Start the generator during a scheduled test and confirm running status, battery voltage and alarms arrive.

Before you order

Which generator controllers can it read?

Any controller that exposes its values as Modbus RTU registers over RS485, which covers most current industrial controllers. Check the controller's own Modbus documentation for the register list.

Can it tell me the battery is getting weak?

If the controller publishes battery voltage over Modbus, yes. A voltage that sags lower each test is the early warning of a battery that will not crank the engine.

Is there a version that does not need a gateway?

Yes. The UC300 is also made with a cellular modem, which sends directly over LTE. That suits a single generator on a remote site.

Can it switch anything?

The UC300 has two relay outputs rated to 3 A at 30 V DC or 250 V AC, but using them to act on a generator is a design decision for the site's engineer, not something to add casually.
