How to choose LoRaWAN sensors

Start from the question each space has to answer, not from the datasheet. A plant room asks “are conditions safe?” — that is a £40 temperature and humidity point. A classroom asks “is this room ventilated?” — that is CO2. A riser asks “is anything leaking?” — that is a leak cable or spot sensor. Pick the cheapest device that answers the question, and spend the saving on more measurement points: coverage beats precision in almost every building-monitoring decision.

Then check three practical things. First, the band: UK deployments need EU868 versions, which is what we stock. Second, the housing: anything outdoors, in a washdown area or in a damp void should be IP66/IP67 rated — indoor-only housings fail early in UK plant rooms and lofts. Third, the reporting interval: battery figures on datasheets assume a default interval, and reporting every five minutes instead of every fifteen can halve battery life. Slower is almost always fine — a fridge does not need a reading a minute.

Connectivity is simpler than it looks. One gateway typically covers a building; walls and metal decks matter more than the headline kilometres. The sensors are standard LoRaWAN devices, so you are never locked in: they work with a Milesight gateway’s built-in network server (no subscription), with The Things Stack, ChirpStack or AWS — and if you change platform later, the hardware moves with you.

Frequently asked questions

What frequency do LoRaWAN sensors use in the UK?

The UK uses the EU868 band (863-870 MHz). Every sensor on this page is the EU868 variant, which is the version we stock — a US915 or AS923 device bought from the wrong region will not talk to a UK gateway, so this is the first thing to check on any datasheet.

Do LoRaWAN sensors need a subscription?

Not necessarily. Every sensor here reports to a LoRaWAN gateway you own, and Milesight gateways include an embedded network server — so a small site can run entirely without a monthly platform fee. Cloud dashboards are optional, not required.

What range do LoRaWAN sensors have in the UK?

On the EU868 band, typical real-world range is 1-3 km in built-up areas and considerably more with line of sight — one gateway usually covers a whole building or site. Placement and construction matter more than the datasheet figure, and we advise on radio planning before you order.

How long do the batteries last?

Most sensors on this page run for multiple years on the fitted battery — the exact figure depends on the model and how often it reports. Each product page states the battery specification, and slowing the reporting interval extends life.

Are these sensors compatible with The Things Stack or ChirpStack?

Yes. These are standard LoRaWAN devices, so they join any compliant network server — The Things Stack, ChirpStack, AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN, or the embedded server inside a Milesight gateway.
